Or don't use them (and / or make your own, like I do...)

Yes, make it yourself, it's as safe as you can get, but alas not for the masses! Nowadays many people are using IPcam's, bought for a nickel and a dime at obscure Chinese sites. When connected to a network these IPcam's are then accessible through an app from any place in the world, so right into their households and nobody questions the security aspects on these apparatus.
In earlier days, you needed some knowledge to access something from the WAN. Doing so, most were aware of the risks, when something becomes accessible from the "outside" and moved these apparatus out of there LAN to something like a DMZ.
Recently I scanned such an IPcam, 5 ports were open, on 2 (23 and 80) there was a service running. Looking at the firewall, there were many states from the IPcam, these states are there 24-7, right into your household.....
I seems that security and plug-and-play are inversely proportional…

The problem, as always, is that we want "all for nothing". We want to join in on all of the current hypes, show off with our newest gimicks, but we don't want to make an effort for it (and also preferrably, we don't want to spend any money on it). And so this is what you get. I call it the "Apple syndrome", all these people dieing to show off the "innovative features" on their Apple phones, which I have been using for years (without Apple stuff...) already because I made it myself or which are simply copied by Apple from others. Irritating to the max.
Why don't we take a few steps back, where we accept that every person has knowledge of some area, respect each other for that and don't try to compete with each other on all areas. People that are not into technical stuff should just buy a simple phone, for a few bucks and use it for what they need it for. Equally technical gimmicks, people that are not knowledgeable about it, should not be using them. Like I don't tamper with my car, because I don't have the knowledge to do so.
