Kia ora,

My Vu+ duo has started freezing when I fast rewind/forward Hdd recordings. The only way out is a reboot from the power switch at the back. Very low speeds 2x 4x 8x ok but once I go over there's an immediate freeze. It's not the Hdd (although it's a few years old) as I have tested on two other hdd by usb. Updated software to 60.rc. but no different.

You have a good memory. No I retired it for over a year. Then got it out again flashed it and its been mostly good although sometimes doesn't start and needs power off on. Not often but yes Caps could be the go now with this hdd problem... cheaper than a new one. Just not sure about the service guys in my town.

When you see "Sam Young" replace asap then you have a brand new machine with lots of years ahead.

Make sure you replace those on power supply too if i remember right there were 4.

oh and one more question re when i get my new hdd . will vu+ duo take a 2TB do you know?

Yep it will take... but the power supply should be good in the first place

With all knownledge collected on the capacitor problems, there is very little that points into the direction of Sam-Young. The caps used are a "miniature series" of Sam Young, not their most-high end series. Still, the caps do much better than many replacement caps: People who replace caps report that the problems return within months, much faster than the original caps. Based on that, my impression is that the original caps must be quite reasonable. The real problem of the capacitor problems is most likely not Sam-Young, but Vu+, they used electrolytics capacitors where the manufacturers of the voltage regulators says that ceramic must be used. They might at least used a Sam Young elco series with higher specs, but they did not. It is exactly those capacitors that break, in other places the capacitors don't break at all. Therefore, I would say, at least 90% of the blame is on the side of Vu+.

Back to the original question: Not every Vu+ Duo problem has to do with capacitors, people on forums often do not do a proper diagnosis. The Vu+ Duo suffers from memory fragmentation. The problem is basically there since the device came on the market and there is little you can do against it, because it happens in kernel-space. It results into media playback problems. A reboot always helps. Allthough annoying, after a reboot, you are usually freed from such problems for several weeks.

Good point. The memory fragmentation kicks in quite a bit harder using gstreamer and the dvb media sink than only doing DVB (watching TV and recording), so I think you on the money here.
