Ahem... can one get any more directly political in terms of choosing sides and become utterly unprofessional, against everything the profession stands for and we all know exactly how and why...???

https://www.rawstory...ob-ties-report/

Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal pulled editorial detailing Trump’s mob ties: report

Billionaire right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal delayed and then killed an editorial revealing Donald Trump’s mob ties, Esquire reported.

WSJ editor Paul Gigot, delayed an editorial by Ted Cruz supporter James Freeman until after Trump was the presumed nominee. Freeman’s article supposedly detailed ties between Trump and organized crime.

The piece was never published and Freeman became a Trump supporter, writing, “America managed to survive Mr. Clinton’s two terms, so it can stand the far less vulgar Mr. Trump.”

Shall we laugh our heads off or shall we bury our faces into our hands and sob endlessly?!?

Aha, this is how it's actually done:

https://www.theguard...EMCNEWEML6619I2

Wolff describes a Trump Tower meeting on 14 December 2016 – during the presidential transition – involving Trump and executives from Silicon Valley companies including Alphabet (parent of Google), Apple, Facebook and Microsoft. Among the issues at stake was a potential crackdown by the incoming president on H-1B visas, the main visa used to hire foreign talent to tech companies.

Later that afternoon, Wolff writes, Trump called Murdoch, who asked how the meeting had gone.

“Oh, great, just great,” the president-elect said, according to Wolff’s account. “Really, really good. These guys really need my help. Obama was not very favourable to them, too much regulation. This is really an opportunity for me to help them.”

The book records Murdoch’s reply: “Donald, for eight years these guys had Obama in their pocket. They practically ran the administration. They don’t need your help.”

Trump is quoted as saying the companies “really need these H-1B visas”.

Wolff writes that Murdoch suggested a more liberal stance on H-1B visas would sit oddly with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, to which the president-elect replied: “We’ll figure it out.”

Wolff writes that Murdoch shrugged as he got off the phone, and said: “What a fucking idiot.”

H-1B visas admit 65,000 workers plus 20,000 graduate student workers each year. Most are awarded to outsourcing firms, which critics say exploit loopholes to fill lower-level IT jobs with foreign workers, often at lower pay.

Promising to “Buy American, Hire American”, Trump offered varying positions on the issue several times during the election campaign. Last month his administration proposed eliminating a regulation that allows spouses of H-1B visa holders to work.

Murdoch’s remark is a rare, revealing moment of discord in his lockstep alliance with the president. According to New York Times reports last year, the two men speak “on the phone every week” or “almost every day”. Murdoch’s conservative Fox News has been a powerful cheerleader for Trump, who has frequently returned the compliment, urging his supporters to watch it.

The White House confirmed last month that Trump had spoken with Murdoch, 86, to congratulate him on the proposed sale of a significant chunk of 21st Century Fox to Disney for $52.4bn. According to Vanity Fair magazine, Trump spoke with Murdoch before the deal “to make sure Murdoch wasn’t selling Fox News”.

Trump has opposed AT&T’s attempted takeover of Time Warner, which owns CNN, the network often branded “fake news” by the president. The justice department has filed a lawsuit to block the $85bn deal.

Done!!! :) Well, almost... ;)

"Dear gorski,

This is big news. The important government watchdog today recommended Rupert Murdoch's takeover of Sky be stopped in its tracks, because it handed him "too much influence over public opinion and the political agenda”. [1]

G, that is exactly what you and thousands more of us have been pushing for. We can be proud that, together, we’re bringing Murdoch's dream to an end.

It's not completely over yet - and there are another few steps before the government can totally scrap Murdoch's plans. [2] But there’s no escaping it - today's news is what Rupert Murdoch was dreading.

This didn’t happen by accident G. Some said Murdoch and his team of pricey lawyers would be more than a match for us. But together, we fought back:

  • As soon as news about the Murdoch's takeover plan broke in December 2016 more than 319,000 of sprung into action - signing a petition to the Culture Secretary, Karen Bradley, asking her to block the deal. She listened - and announced a first stage investigation. [3]

  • 71,165 of us then sent in our own responses to the investigation. They had one big message: Murdoch can't be trusted with more control over our media - this deal is bad news for our democracy.

  • In June 2017 Karen Bradley announced she was considering an even deeper investigation into the deal. 27,864 of us immediately emailed her, pushing her to follow through. She did.

  • Together, we proved the public are against the takeover. 38 Degrees-ers raised the money to pay for professional polling - not once, but three times. The result was clear to see - the public didn't trust Murdoch. [4]

  • We called in the experts. 38 Degrees-ers like you raised money to pay expert researchers to show Rupert Murdoch already has too much influence on our politicians. Then we got the research in the papers. [5]

So what next? There are still a few steps before the watchdog investigating the deal announces its final decision. [6] Murdoch and his team will be fighting tooth and nail to challenge the watchdog's recommendations. So we'll need to keep fighting to protect our media and our democracy.

But for today, we can all celebrate a huge step in the right direction.

Thanks for everything you’ve done,

Maggie, Nuri, Amy, Ellie, Bex and the 38 Degrees office team

"...we've got 24 hours to tell the markets watchdog (the CMA) they should follow through and recommend blocking Rupert Murdoch’s Sky takeover.

They're asking for our views now, and already 40,000 38 Degrees-ers have emailed them. The deadline is tomorrow at 5pm. Will you email the CMA now before it's too late? There's a template you can use - it'll take less than two minutes:

Not entirely useless, to protest... ;)

I've got an exciting update. Rupert Murdoch has been blocked from taking over Sky News. [1] That means he won't be able to add it to his news empire, and won't be able to use it to interfere with our democracy. I want to say congratulations to you - to all of us - for helping to stop him.

The situation is a bit complicated. It's taken the 38 Degrees office team a little while to pick through the details, and this is a longer email than usual. Read on for all the details, but here's the super-quick summary:

  • 1. The government has blocked Murdoch from taking over Sky News
    2. Our campaigning clearly made a massive difference
    3. Murdoch may end up owning other bits of Sky TV - minus Sky News

Together, we forced the government to accept that the Sky News takeover would give Murdoch more influence over "public opinion and the UK's political agenda". [2] Murdoch won't be able to control Sky News. It's their final decision. [3]

This definitely isn't what Murdoch wanted. And it proves what we can do when we work together. Murdoch has been using his army of lobbyists to try to get full control of Sky News since 2010. [4] Hundreds of thousands of us came together to stop his bid then - it was one of 38 Degrees' first campaigns. So when he launched a fresh bid in 2016, we jumped back into action.

Comcast outbids Fox for broadcaster Sky

US cable giant Comcast has submitted the highest bid in the auction for broadcaster Sky, valuing the company at more than £30bn.

Comcast beat Rupert Murdoch's Fox in a rare blind auction process set by the UK's Takeover Panel.

The firm's chairman and chief executive said it was "a great day for Comcast".

Sky has recommend its shareholders accept the bid, saying it was an "excellent outcome" and "represents materially superior value".

The UK company's 23m subscribers and Premier League football rights make it one of Europe's most profitable TV companies.

Comcast's bid equated to £17.28 per share, beating Fox's of £15.67 per share.

Fox had looked set to take over the 61% of Sky it does not already own until Comcast topped its bid.

In July, Fox raised its offer to £24.5bn, but this was trumped by a £26bn bid from Comcast.

The process has also been beset by regulatory issues amid concerns over media plurality and the degree of Mr Murdoch's influence over the UK media landscape.

Brian Roberts, chairman and chief executive of Comcast, said: "Sky is a wonderful company with a great platform, tremendous brand, and accomplished management team.

"This acquisition will allow us to quickly, efficiently and meaningfully increase our customer base and expand internationally.

"We now encourage Sky shareholders to accept our offer, which we look forward to completing before the end of October 2018."

_103507156_foxcomcastdisney_v2-nc.png

The future of Sky has been hanging in the balance for more than eight years.

The process began when Mr Murdoch's News Corp company put forward a bid for full control of what was then BSkyB.

That bid was scuppered by the phone-hacking scandal that engulfed Mr Murdoch's UK tabloid newspapers and tarnished the firm's reputation.

The bid was revived in December 2016, by which time News Corp had been broken up, leaving 21st Century Fox as one of its successors.

The process has been complicated by Disney's deal to buy most of Fox's assets, which is due to be completed next year if approved by international regulators.

But is it good-bye?

What of IT, DE etc. etc.???

IT, DE, ES and IE are all subsidiaries of Sky plc, so I expect Comcast/NBC have bought them too. I detest Murdoch and I'm glad if this means I can finally buy Sky fibre broadband because it's often a very good price but I'm not sure that this takeover is good for news diversity because does it now mean that right-wing Sky News and left-wing CNBC are owned by the same company?

What worries me a bit with Comcast taking over is that I really don't like how Euronews has been broken up into national single-language versions with in-vision newsreaders since NBC bought 25% of it, so I don't think NBC are going to respect European broadcast traditions or hesitate in making sweeping changes to Sky to Americanise it.

Indeed! It needs regulation! Serious regulation.

The French realised it long ago, that it is impossible to "compete" with the kind of money Hollywood has, so they put some dosh into it and legally obliged production of all sorts.... Well, if one doesn't want to be completely over-run, in a "pretty complete cultural hegemony takeover" manner, that is...

Sadly, much as I have no time for the French gov, they are right on this issue...

Here's a definitive answer to that Q: https://www.bbc.co.u...siness-45654792

Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox will sell its 39% stake in Sky to Comcast, ending the media mogul's association with the satellite broadcaster after almost three decades.

It had been unclear whether Fox would retain its stake in Sky after Comcast won a £30bn bidding war for the satellite broadcaster on Saturday.

Fox has now decided to accept Comcast's £17.28 a share offer, which values the Sky stake at £11.6bn.

Now, what will Comcast do with it...???!!!???
