Hello,

i've downloaded a couple of 4k (3840x2160 p30) short videos from youtube and copied them to the internal hard disk installed in my Mut@nt but my decoder can't properly play them. Random parts of the screen are not correctly displayed as they look very pixelated; part of the image doesn't change when the video switches to a new frame and so on.

Same result if i play them from a usb pen plugged in any of the ports of the decoder.

But if i directly plug the usb pen to the tv they are shown perfectly (so no issue with the videos theirselves). On the other hand, when I watch 4k FTA channels with my decoder they are also perfect and I don't have any issues.

Then i'm wondering if it's a media player problem.....

Do you know if there's a better option to replace the stock one?

Or if you think that the solution can be another one, please let me know.. any help would be really appreciated!

thank you very much

The decoder, especially from budget receiver's SoC's, is limited in what it can play. It's designed to play DVB streams. Everything that's not a DVB streams may or may not be played correctly.

And in mode 12 with pip this box is even more limited... especially for p30/60...
And when it is 4K AVC then it can’t play... only hevc is possible.

thank you both for the quick answer!

I was afraid it would be something like that.. so the only option would be to download them in h.265 or to play them directly from the tv...

best regards

Hi,

H.265/HVEC requires a licence to be used and since YouTube is part of Google they use the Google free alternative to h.265 which is called VP9, so if you don't re-encode the file you download from YouTube and if your SoC doesn't support VP9 you won't be able to read the file.

Probably when it comes from youtube the format is VP9. The SOC support it but with Gstreamer and Enigma2 it's still buggy.

I tried in past to play VP9 with native Kodi player and this work pretty good.

You can try it with Kodi and when you select the movie press context/portal button and select the native Kodi player.

Dream adjust last week something in their box so that VP9 works fine with Gstreamer, however as it's closed we cannot see what is fixed so it plays well. Lets hope that VP9 on E2 will been fixed soon as well.

Actually you can see, use strace -ff -s 10000 -e open, write gst-launch-1.0 .... and compare the write calls to video0.

The VP9 superframe is written in small pieces.

TS says he can watch, but with lots of artifacts. So the SoC can play it.

I think WTE is right. Either that, or VP9 handling by mutant's mediasink, or VP9 handling in the SoC. The VP9 stream might also use features (levels/profiles) that the decoder doesn't support, which brings me back to my original statement.

Hello,

so my next question is where i can find Kodi for Openpli 6.0, as it's not in the list of plugins i have in my decoder,.. i've only found a thread about Kodi on 6.1... is it also ok?

thank you so much

SOC info BCM7439 what for example HD51 use:

mode 1 : 3840x2160P60 8-bit VP9

mode 12: 3840x2160P50 8-bit VP9

It's so only up to 8bit for colordepth.

Yes, buy a receiver with a SoC that does support the media you want to play. Or transcode them.

Hi,

I am looking at OpenPLi wiki settopbox compartison and I see the following for HD51:

HEVC decoding in media: no

Is this correct and does it mean no HEVC files can be viewed on this receiver, as opposed to VU+ UHD boxes?

ET9000, OpenPLi 4.0, 13E, 19E

HD51, OpenPLi 6.2, 75E - 30W

It's outdated, they added hevc decoding in media some time ago.
