first of all, i would like to thank the team for the great work!!!
my problem is that the 6.1 to 6.2 update is always crashing (the reciver failed to start) after online update, in telenet (no space)
i think is a space limitation problem...
is there any chance to reduce to packtage size of the 6.2 openpli version (78.45MB) ? since the 6.1 openpli is only (66.58MB) and is working great

Hi,
You probably have an STB that has a very low flash capacity so unfortunately online update will failed.
So you need to download the 6.2 image for your box from the OpenPLi download page and flash it with the USB method.

Yup, the first generation VU+ and Xtrend, and the XP1000, only have 128MB flash.
OpenPLi needs about 95MB of that, so if you have installed some plugins or skins, there isn't much room left to download updates.
Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)
Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

I've faced the same problem. I've redirected opkg cache to the hdd by adding the line below to /etc/opkg/opkg.conf
option cache_dir /hdd/opkg/cache
I assume the directory must exists, so I've created it on the disk. One can also redirect the temporary directory, but I haven't tested this.
After that I've succesfully upgraded the system, but some warnings appeared.
(eg. "Failed to open ///var/lib/opkg/info/enigma2.list" - this file is empty now). Perhaps the earlier failed upgrades damaged something.
(btw. failed upgrades leave junk on the flash, most probably some temporary files, which disappeared after reboot - I've checked it with df.)
I will eventually reinstall the system, but my point is that current image size for uno is problematic. Its near the flash limit and usually you will add a few extra packages. There is always a risk of damaging the system during upgrade but with so little space on the device it must just happen sooner or later.
Maybe it would be enough to move less critical files to hdd, which I suspect most users have in their tuners?

You have the AutoBackup solution that can take a backup of your important files.
Then you use a USB Flash and at the very boot you will be prompted to restore your settings (previously saved with AutoBackup).
This is the safest way to flash a low flash capacity STB.
OpenPLi is one of the image that have the fewest packages pre-installed, but image size increases because new features are added.
At some stage I guess that support for old boxes will have to be dropped due to lack of flash memory.
Moving files to hdd is not a proper solution since not every user have a HDD attached to there box.

I've used incremental updates because of convenience, but will have to changed that. I haven't noticed that earlier but the system actually broke and I had to reinstall everything from scratches. I will try the AutoBackup method next time.
I understand the limitations but hope that at least security updates will be available longer.
Last but not least thanks and respect for supporting older device. They may seem a bit obsolete but do their job.

The rules for small flash device is to use the USB method to perform the major release update (changing version).
Afterwards you can use the online update since that update only a few packages but if another version change is done, prefer the USB flash.

It seems I wasn't clear enough. I do upgrades that way. The problem is that the last online update I've made (with 21 packages to go) actually broke my system because of insuffficient space. My conclusion is that the online update method is no longer safe. I'm using additional packages, but my system is quite minimal, so other users can be in the same situation.
I'm sure the base system can still be shrinked - for example hbbtv plugin could be removed. (I would vote for the fancontrol2 instead, which I find important for the health of electronics.)
The good point is that the AutoBackup worked reliably, although one needs to reinstall additional packages manually, but it's a marginal issue.

The first generation VU+ has a small flash, 128MB. OpenPLi 6 needs about 95MB after install, but opkg downloads all packages before installation, causing you to run out of space on large updates.
We might need to start checking on flash size, and disable online updates for boxes with only 128MB flash.

The reality looks worse than the above numbers might suggest. Only 114M of flash is dedicated to root partition, then the file-system takes quite a lot of space for its internal use. As a result df reports for ubi0:rootfs 97.5M size with only 3.7M free space. This is for a basically configured system (manually scanned HotBird+Astra) with just two necessary additional packages for cam support and fan control utility.
