Try this in telnet:
touch /media/server1/test
touch /media/server1/movie/test
Does that work?

It's just to see if you have write access to the NLSU2 and if you have write access to the directory movie on the NLSU2.

Not found? That's a strange error.
Could you try:
ls /media
And just a random command, like:
ps
Looks like something is corrupted...

Did you create the /hdd/movie directory? Did you create it from the DB with the telnet the command mkdir /hdd/movie? It doesn't really matter if you can create the directory w/ the NAS's interface, you need the proper permissions to create files from the DB. I would guess thet you have write access as the touch errors above didn't return errors, but ls /media doesn't show if the files were actually created in /media/server1 & /media/server1/movies...

This is the message i get when i try to create /hdd/movie directory via telnet "root@dm500 ~ # mkdir /hdd/movie
mkdir: Cannot create directory `/hdd/movie': Read-only file system"
I also navigate to the server dir using the nas web interface and " test" was written to both serve1 and server1/movie

You should be mounting to /media/hdd on a 500, not to server1 if you want to do recordings. Plus if you are getting a read only filesystem when trying to do a mkdir /hdd/movie then I suspect that your hdd volume isn't mounted.
I have a NSLU2 at home (now sitting in a box somewhere) and did use it with the stock linksys firmware + unslung against a ntfs and ext3 drive, they both mounted fine (to /media/hdd).
I suggest you check that the share is created correctly, and don't try and mount "disk 1" as I always had problems mounting the default share since it has a space in it. I always created a new directory & share called dreambox, then create a "movie" directory under there, allowing full write control.
I now use a Linksys NAS200, however do kinda regret not spending a little bit more and getting a DLink DNS-323 as they seem to be the linux hackers NAS. I would recommend the DNS-323/NAS200 any day over the NSLU2 since the disks are contained within the box, and you don't need extra power cords/enclosures etc, which makes the cost differential between a NSLU2 and NAS200 minimal (assuming you have SATA disks).

Working fine i updated the firmware and also flash unslug.
The unit is not working properly ,it will not reset nor will it reformat my usb hd.
I was able to get it recording,i map the drive then i created a share ..movie
I then use the web interface to mount the share.
Client Directory..../hdd
Server Directory .....movie (name of share)
Ip......192.168.**.*** (ip address of the slug) should always change the default for security.
User Name ....admin is default
Password........******* password you use to for admin, default is admin should change.
Options...... rsize=4096,wsize=4096
check nolock,intr,udp.
Will be returning for exchange i have 30 days .Mine is a old version v1 the latest is v2 this is indicated at the end of the model # eg NSLU2 v2
I think v1 run at a lower speed 133mhz and v2 run at 230mhz ,v1 can be overclock.
I do like the fact that i can now record without turning my pc on
