Testen is makkelijk genoeg:
mkfs.ext4 -C 262144 -T largefile -N 262144 -m0 -O dir_index,bigalloc,sparse_super /dev/sda1
(aannemende dat sda de disk is).

I did a small test on a regular Linux installation, with the above command (minus the -N option, because I don't have that much space free).
It takes less than a second to create a filesystem of 10 Gb. Extrapolate that to a regular 4 Tb partition would yield 6.5 minute. But I'm fairly sure in the end it takes way less time.

As that is the exact command enigma executes, the question remains why it was fast when the disk was USB connected, but slow as a snail when that same disk was SATA connected?

SATA disk terribly slow (in writing)? That's the only explanation I can think of. I'd think both a read and write performance test would be helpful.

It isn't the disk, since it's proven to work fine if you connect it to a SATA-to-USB adapter.
Appearently there are cases where dirty SATA connectors cause problems, but I understand the TS has checked those...
(p.s. boeiend dat we als twee Nederlandstaligen, in een NL forum, spontaan in het Engels over gaan. Beroepsdeformatie? )
