I cant seem to find in the menu where to initialise a hard drive or cf card under jade on a 7025
any pointers for the technically blind ?

I think there should be an item 'Harddisk setup' in the system menu.
But you'll only see it if an IDE or SCSI device has been detected.

that suggests that the 7025 has not recognised either the cf card or the laptop hard drive I have tried to install (seperately)
back to the drawing board - master,slave, cable select hmmmm

I assume you connected the devices while the box was switched off?
there's no hotplug support for ide.

Harddrive should be master.
CF is master on it's own ide bus.

What do you see in /sys/block/? (apart from loop and mtdblock devices)

yes - box switched off when cf plugged in - same card worked in DM7000
hard drive installed first as master - then cable select
/sys/block has /loop0 through to /loop7 and mtdblock0 thru to mtdblock3
still playing..

update - ok I got the CF recognised - when I unplugged the hard drive
hard drive no go - no sound on boot up from drive - its a 2.5" - so tomorrow I check it elsewhere
then check the power to drive cable in dm7025

you're sure you didn't connect the ide connector upsidedown?

When should you use disc and when use part1 to format a hdd, cf or usb. How difference are? Thanks.

this happens automatically, when you initialise the device from the menu (a single partition is created, and initialised, so you'll end up using part1)
