I've mounted Win7 shares and Synology shares
when Win7 is off PLi7 seems to have issue with it
here is the mount in v6.2

I can not share mount result from 7.1 as it doesn't finish neither via gui or cli while in 6.2 its flying it

Sorry? So you switch of your PC which has a box with an active share connected to it, and you expect that to work fine?
That can never work, as soon as you access something on the share, the driver expects a response, and has to wait for a timeout (and if the mount is not "soft, intr", it will wait forever).
And I see you make SMBv1 connections. Have you manually re-enabled those on your Synology and Windows? Because on both they were disabled last year because of serious security flaws in the protocol. OpenPLI 7.2 will not make SMBv1 connections anymore, unless you force it too. There are no differences in the mount code between 6.2 and 7.1.

Yes I do expect it to work the same as its been working in v3 v4 v5 v6
In v6 when my NAS or PC goes to sleep it doesn't bothers the tuner to list /media/hdd/movie resources
and if I go to my mounted folder like NAS or EeeBox then it wakes it up - there is a delay but its totally normal
v7 behaves differently.. it doesn't wake them up.. it simply freezes
In relation to SMB I do have SMB1 enabled on the boxes for legacy reasons - I don't need it any more so I may try disable it and see if it improves anything but at the same time v2 is supported
my Win10 talks 3.0 to Synology and 2.0 to W7 - not sure why PLi talks 1.0 - maybe this is the issue
Posted 10 October 2019 - 12:30
That doesn't make sense. As soon as you create a mount from /media/hdd to a remote machine, the box will ALWAYS list the contents of /media/hdd if you open the movie list, and to do that, it will ALWAYS contact the remote machine.
If you would use autofs, it which would disconnect the mount when it has been idle, and it would try to create the mount again when you access it.
Maybe you were using autofs before?
Unlike Windows, the Linux CIFS kernel driver doesn't do SMB version discovery. It connects to the configured default version, which for pre 4.x kernels is 1.0, and for kernels > 4.13, it's 3.0, unless a version is specified in the mount options. For optimum compatibility, OpenPLi 7.2 defaults to SMB v2.1 is no version is specified, earlier versions used whatever the kernel default was.

Im using the fstab since donkey days (PLi v3)
my Synology talks 2.1 to Win7
I'll do fresh install this weekend to make sure the upgrade didn't messed it up but it seems to be something fishy with the cifs mout in v7
in the meantime what in your opinion (considering we have a mixed environment MS/NAS/STB boxes) is the best practice these days to mount?
Posted 10 October 2019 - 13:05
Ok. Then you're in charge of your own mount options.
Personally I mount everything using NFS, but I don't have any Windows (from Microsoft ) in the house. I find it slightly faster and a lot more stable than CIFS. But NFS is even less forgiving when it comes to switching off the server side.
Why does your NAS go off btw? I can imagine you may want to enable the hdd sleep mode, but the entire NAS?

it doesn't go off completely.. its a deep sleep tied to HDD hibernation simply to save power - same as Win7 on my EeeBox (which i use for some MS only applications)
up till v7 I had no issues so will disable the smb v1 on the MS and do a fresh 7.2 install on the solo4k to compare
Posted 10 October 2019 - 13:32
That should not be a problem, the HDD's of my Synology go in hibernation as well. When that happens, and I access the mount, I hear the disks spinning up, and once available again, the directory contents is shown. It doesn't hang up the box.

Hi,
sure, nfs is faster as cifs (also with smb version=3.0), i have testet it.
if i copy a movie with circa 5 gb from internal disk to my nas it takes just about 9 - 10 minutes if it's ready
if i copy the same movie with nfs it takes only just about 5 minutes if it's ready, but while the time if the movie will copied i can't look another movie
on my nas and also the scrolling in the movielist only on nas is very slow.
i copy always about my e2box (vu ultimo 4k) from internal disk to nas.
but if i want to use my nas also for smart-tv and i copy with nfs about the e2box then the movie is not indexed and so i must do this manually on the nas (synology ds213)
, otherwise i can't see the movie on my smart-tv.
if i copy with cifs the movie is automatically indexed, so i can say cifs is good for smart-tv.
regards
Pike

Which is why you should copy using the GUI, and not using the commandline. The NIC of the box, and its driver, is very basic, so if you overload it, you get problems like this. The GUI copies, throttled, in the background, to avoid these issues.
For the Synology it shouldn't matter which protocol you use, index issues need to be solved on the NAS.

i copy with the gui about the movielist and copy, select target, and press ok.

That should not block your network connection, as it copies small blocks at the time. Obviously, it depends on your network connection, Gbps wired would be quite different from a flaky wlan connection.

i use Gbps wired, but i know my synology DS213 is not the fastest NAS, it has duo core cpu and only 512 ram.
my network-cables are all cat5e or cat 6, and in the picture you can see my speedtest by ookla;
network_speed.jpg 104.75KB 3 downloads

Mine is a DS414, which I think has the same Armada dual core, but 1024MB memory. Internet speed should not be relevant (I have to say I am VERY jealous about that kind of speeds ).
