Unicable can handle two positions or you'd have to switch to JESS for 32 positions... But JESS switches are still very expensive.

If TS only needs two positions, a Unicable switch may be a very good solution, not that expensive.

If you need four positions, two Unicable switches may be a solution. Sometimes two JESS switches can be combined to output on one cable, there maybe such a thing for Unicable too. Otherwise you'd need to have two tuners, and have one tuner dedicated to position A,B and one tuner to C,D. For a "regular" tuner, that would be silly, but if you have an FBC tuner, it would be ideal, because it can loop through automatically to either input.

Dear PR2,

It seems you don't understand the request. How should I program a daily recording if I want to record a single movie that overlaps?

As to my requirements, I am (was) a simple consumer, expecting a system that meets user needs and wants. I didn't know anything about sat TV. In the past two years I have learned a lot and I am still learning, for example I didn't know Unicable exists. So how could I spec something that I don't know exists?

However, as promised to WanWizard, I am working on the detailed specification. I'll be back soon.

Pr2 does have a point, though ....... It's you who setup the timers so it's up to you to make sure that those recordings are possible at all.

but the system will help you by pointing out any timer conflicts when an impossible request is being made - and again it will be up to you to decide how to solve that conflict.

the golden rule is that the more tuners you have, the less problems you will have setting any recorder timings.

Dear PR2,

It seems you don't understand the request. How should I program a daily recording if I want to record a single movie that overlaps?

I perfectly understand your request and it just because your are too lazy to schedule properly your recording.

You can write any specification that you want, this is far too complex to implement. What if you have 2 or 3 or 4 top priority recordings which conflict with each others?

So you have a recording running, then a priority one start but 30 minutes later another top priority also start that conflict with the 1st one.

How will you solve this?

And then you activate the timeshift on your box do you considered it as over the top priority or do you agree to lose your timeshift for a recording? Then you will ask that when starting a timeshift user should be prompt how important it is to let or not recording stop it to proceed. But someone else can think that timeshift is top priority.

Now you see something interesting that you want to record, you press the record button, how important is this instant recording? May be it is more important that your scheduled top priority recording.

Then you are streaming a channel to your smartphone or to another box (for example in the bedroom), will you consider the currently running streaming as top priority? (For your info streaming is the same as recording).

To solve you problem is easy, connect your brain and think of what you really need to record and schedule them accordingly. Or use a proper setup at home.

If you have daily recording setting up a time will warm you of the conflict, then it's up to you to take the decision and adjust the timers, don't start asking for priority level that will be a nightmare and a total mess.

My thougths:

I think one important thing is that a recording will be recorded - always!

I suggest that the setup (hardware) is changed so you can record 3 channels and maybe watch one live. You already have suggestion in thread, like two unicable heads and two cables down to an FBC tuner with two inputs.

Another option. Keep what you have today but add one more STB with cables to the LNBs. This require LNB with output for this (maybe you need to change LNB). You actually don't need to control this box at the TV. You could use webif or app in phone/tablet. Maybe you can have it at a second TV in house. It could use the harddisc in the existing STB.

Well, I tried to use my brain, even i it is a small one, and have come up with a specification.

To be sure it is doable, I also have written it in code (in C). The code compiles but it has not been tested. It is just a prototype to be sure it is doab;e. it also helped me identify some points to work out.

If you agree it is useful, I can work it out a bit more.

Paul.

why waste your time on this ? not useful :

you set up a recording, this new recording has a conflict, the recorder conflict list appears

here you solve the conflict in any way you like, either by de-activating other timer(s) or by changing the start/end times of the new or the existing timers.

once the conflict is solved, the new timers are saved in memory.

any automatic process will only create more incertainties. Don't do it.
