Why not simply install nano?
opkg update && opkg install nano
nano /etc/enigma2/settings

I am using Notepad++ of course in Windows OS (it doesn't exist under Linux yet, if I'm not mistaken). Notepad++ is the best editor for Windows OS.
Using the Nano or the Vi editor in Linux is a dilemma. They are cumbersome, old and clumsy. They served 20-30 years ago in terminal connections. Nowadays, if I have the option to use a faster and more powerful Windows editor, I'd rather use this Notepad++ 
.
Finally, the initial query concerns the use of an automated shell script (without user intervention). So using a text editor is irrelevant to this question
