I am wondering if is possible to open web interface for access from wan, but keep it safe enough, by setting better username/pass or set MAC address filter, as I noticed built in firewall service in settings. Could anyone point me to proven solution?

You can use the build in firewall (depends on your box type) or change the root password (which is the same as the web interface password).

Which box do you have?

I have dm600. Would like to avoid complicated root passwords so I can easily access the box from LAN, so I thought MAC filter would be great for this.

You could try the firewall. /etc/firewall.users is the file which contains the allowed IP addresses. I don't know if MAC filtering would be possible anyway through internet.
