Every night a backup of a DS918+ (currently 2 bays with 2 WD RED disks (CMR) in RAID 1), is written to an external USB. In my strategy there are 2 of these, 1 for the odd weeks and one for the even weeks and the one not in use is kept in the safe.

Now for the question; "For those who use the same (or maybe an even better one) strategy, what FS do you use for the external backup (USB)?

Use Hyperbackup, it is a lot more efficient than manual backup strategies. And I use an rsync backend to backup over the internet to a server I have in Germany.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Look at the tag, below the Topic name and you will see I use Hyperbackup ;).

I'm not sure Hyperbackup likes you swapping disks, as it keeps meta data on the NAS. That is why I assumed you were "copying".

I don’t understand? I have 2 backups in hyperback, when I connect the even weeks USB, I stop the daily scheduled uneven week backup and vica versa

For maximum compatibility use FAT, but you won't be able to store all Unix FS metadata. Not directly it can be done if you make a tar file and store that on FAT. But that will limit you severly on synchronisation possibilities.

Otherwise I'd use the file system most used on Earth (probably after FAT, NTFS and exFAT), so all bugs will have been discovered already (and hopefully fixed). I think you know what I am referring to.

I don't read PM -> if you have something to ask or to report, do it in the forum so others can benefit. I don't take freelance jobs.
Ik lees geen PM -> als je iets te vragen of te melden hebt, doe het op het forum, zodat anderen er ook wat aan hebben.

Ah,ok. You don't simply switch disks, you have a separate backup job for each disk. In which case I haven't said anything.

I use ext3 on my 2 usb devices connected to a Synology ds214+ and I am using the "USB copy" firmware functionality of my Synology to copy the data.

2 x ultimo4k (dvb-c fbc + 1 dvb-s2, 8.3r/nb) + een et10k/osmini (geen tuners en dus fallbackclient, nb) met een Synology ds214+ (2 x 6 TB) op DSM 7.1.1 in ziggo oost (voormalig @Home) + A1/A2/A3/HB (TechniSat)
