Hello, the title says it all!

I'm trying to play a 4K 60FPS H264 file on my very expensive Ultimo 4K and I only get a black screen with audio.

The same file is opended and read without any problem on my very cheap 4K receiver Amiko Viper 4k using an OpenVix image....

So it is really a hardware restriction or an image restriction? A missing Codec in Openpli?

How can such an expensive product miss this kind of  file ?

What about the "NEW" Vu+ DUO 4K SE? Is it the same Crap?

Why would it be worth investing so much money then?

Thanks

Hardware limitation. Ultimo4k and Duo4k SE cannot playback 4k h264 files. 4K is only supported for h265.
This box is a satellite/cable receiver. 4K h264 is not broadcasted via satellite/cable. So why should it support it?
Expensive don’t mean that you can playback whatever you want.

"This box is a satellite/cable receiver" as well as Amiko Viper 4k!!! but it works fine with it, where is the limitation? Processor? What's the difference between these 2   "satellite/cable receivers" ???

Hardware limitation! Chipset/processor don’t support it.

And calm down. We can’t do anything about it.
It is like it is and the specifications of the box don’t say that 4K h264 is supported. So better read before you buy something.

Hi,

it is a quite long known fact that not all h264 STBs play films >1920x1080. From VU only the old DUO4K (without SE) can play but there is another limitation that it cannot play wmv at least not the files I tried. If you want a box then can play more I would advice an Android box because they are based on mobile chips which can play almost everthing.

The Amiko Viper 4K is an HiSilicon box. The VU+ is a Broadcom box.

The HiSils do hardware accellerated decoding in software, which is much more flexible than Broadcom, which requires hardware support for all supported formats.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

It's so sad and frustrating to hear that. Thinking of buying a high end product that is overstepped by a low cost chip (Hisilicon)... Really sad...

Overstepped is not the word to use! As explained earlier, the Broadcom SoC has a number of fixed A/V formats. This is done for a reason: It supports the formats the box can receive and decode by it's tuners. After all, it's not a fully fletched MultiMedia Player. Decoding by hardware is reliable and fast. Software implementation is slower. If you record via the tuner(s) in the device you will always be able to play them back...

And not to forget, Broadcom has been around for a long time, new SoC's are evolutions from older SoC's. And the SoC design is primarily made for STB solutions like the many (closed source) boxes providers supply.

The HiSilicon chipset is new, and designed to support Android TV, so it has taken a different approach because of the flexibility required.

Rumour has it that Broadcom is planning to pull out of the (for them) low end market, and only supply chipsets for more high-end solutions (headends, etc).

Yes but then Broadcom should enlarge the supported AV formats and not reduce it. I would expect that a 400€ box is supporting more A/V formats than a 40€ android TV box.  ;)

The price doesn't matter. E.g. you can buy an expensive iphone 11. Then you can say it is high class phone and is expensive so it has to support 5G. But still it don't support 5G and is expensiver than other mobile phones that support 5G.

I guess Broadcom doesn't really care. They sold a chipset that don't support 4k h264 decoding and that's what the customer got. Nothing to complain.

He ventilated the same 'complaint' on the VU+ forum.. He is simply frustrated that a €500 box doesn't perform as he expected. HiSilicon uses software to decode and not the hardware (complete). He should have performed a 'due diligence' test before buying. Simple as that..
