The confusion came from the different meaning we used for the same terms: "box" in my definition is the STB while for some others this is the modem/router used to access the internet.

iptables is usually only used at router level, the STB being just a LAN device in your network like any other. Hence the OP's expectation that accessing his STB via internet should work with port fwd defined at his router level ... and without any iptable defined on his NAS, for example ...

The expectation is correct, and I can't think of any issue that would prevent it (assuming the router is configured correctly), apart from no or an incorrect default gateway, or some other routing problem on the STB (for example static routes to another interface), both don't come into play for local-attached IP's.

Well, I was able to find out what was causing the problem even though I was terribly tired after a long working day: I had to cancel, on my Mac (file /Users/user_name/.ssh/known_hosts) the entry about the FQDN of the STB which dated back to the previous installation(s) of ssh when I was still using OpenATV.
I will have a look at Openwebif after a good night sleep.
Thank you all, guys, for your help and support. ;)

Thanks again to all of you.
Ps: Openwebif is working now even outside my WLAN.
Please don't ask me what happened, though...

I won't.

Too distracted by your name, I used to own a Burroughs B90, including the external 10MB hard drive :P :

That's great, WanWizard... :D :D :D
Well, I've spoken too early: this morning I was setting my hard drive up and I noticed that everything was as before.
Honestly speaking, I have no explanation for that...
My STB (Zgemma H7S) is giving me lots of issues since I bought it (it basically freezes tens of times a day) and I'm starting to think it's faulty.

Did you set a password to the root account first?
If there is no password set ssh won't work.
Connect in telnet and type:
passwd
Then setup a password.

Thank you, Pr2, it was obviously the first thing I did before configuring this and other services.

Well, I've finally understood what happened: most of the times, when the STB freezes and I'm forced to switch it on manually, for some strange reason, the VPN connection, which I had previously set up, starts and, of course, the host can be reached only through the internal network.
Quite frankly speaking, this Zgemma is driving me mad!!!!!

If you're using the standard OpenVPN package, it installs the sysV symlinks for runlevel 3, which will start it on boot.

Also, restart Enigma in debug mode as you as the boot boots, and when it freezes next time, maybe the debug log has answers...

Thank you for the info, WanWizard, I didn't know it.
How can I edit the symlinks, considering there's no systemctl command on Enigma2?

Our OE still uses SysV init, not systemd.

Quickest is to go into /etc/rc3.d and remove the OpenVPN symlink.

Thank you so much, WanWizard, for your support.
I've proceeded to remove the symbolic link on /etc/rc3.d, as I need Openvpn to work on demand, but I've noticed that this service (based on Expressvpn) starts randomly at times and I can't explain why.
