I have a problem, my Windows 10 has crashed. There is no recovery procedure on the HDD, so there is nothing to restore. Also in other ways I don't get a recovery, all I can do is format and start over but then I lose everything, and there are 3 separate users set up with their own desktop. how do I fix this without losing the data. the HDD is Read only.

Is it a hardware crash (i.e. failed disk or other hardware component), or a software crash?
Does it boot at all (i.e. can you do a safe boot)?
If it's not a disk failure, you can try booting the PC with a Linux recovery CD or USB (like p.e. Knoppix), mount the nfts partition on the harddisk, and copy all data off that you want to save before reinstalling Windows 10.

Hi WanWizard I can just access the SSD, that's not the problem, via Dos. screen with the utilities fails due to no access SSD is read-only set by Windows itself. And I don't have a 2nd HDD to make a copy. I've never done a reinstallation while keeping files, so I don't know if it can be done that way. The SSD is simply good.

Also not a USB device you can install a live Linux install on, which enough space to backup files?
Do you have original Windows 10 media? Normally when you boot that, you get an option to repair instead of install.

I have Windows 10 media on USB but can't use those tools from there. error messages, it cannot find the recovery or cannot modify the SSD because the SSD is Read only etc.

Or ram defect.... I had thuis once. Windows could not find it but Ubuntu boot did find it...

See in Repair USB, it there are more item for continue to Win10 ( I don't remember the name of the pictogram). In last month I fixed some similar on 2 PCs - there was created next 2 (wrong) items into boot tab. Then was enough find true boot item in list, boot to win and then fix it in win with 'msconfig'.

For download data you can use or Linux CD or you can download and create boot USB Strelec PE . It is similar as was HirensBootCD, bit with standallone Win10PE. Download it, unpack (pswd is 'strelec'), create usb with 'rufus', Then you have USB with Win10 and with a lot of utilities.

Once I had this kind issue with my windows 8.1 to save data . I had used hiren cd and launched mini xp from it which allowed me to access the drive and saved my data to another spare drive

Boot with Linux Live CD, save your data via USB, check the SSD, wipe the SSD, do a fresh install.
And think about backup...

In most cases is it recovereable (when is hw ok) ... but you must find knowledgeable technician in your area, who will fixing it on your pc. But no 'specialist' who says - download data and format.
First - try boot from usb recovery (or from usb W10 install medium - select language and "Repair computer") to dos line and there use: chkdsk disk: /f ... feg.: chkdsk d: /f
You can find your disk name f.eg with:
diskpart (enter)
list volume (enter)
exit (enter)
or
bcdedit (enter)
