I use the OpenPli 8.0 on a Gigablue Quad 4k. I have experience that the timeshift sometime does not start automatically and the pause and other like << >> buttons do not work. After channel zapping will work. There was not any problem in OpenPli 7.3.

Does anyone experience similar problem?

What is your setting? After how many seconds should timeshift start after zapping?

How often does this problem happen? If it's reproducible, it would be good if you can create a log.

You need to enable permanent timeshift I think. Seems that you expect your box to always be immediately ready for timeshift.
By default timeshift only start when you press pause button but then you will have to wait for the HDD to spin up.

It should start after 2 seconds. It happens 2-3 times in a week. I don't know why and when. Mostly after weaking up from standby (???). Sometimes after zapping channels and I watch a program for tens minutes and then I try to rewind/pause.... The disabled symbol appears on the tv screen (for some seconds).

How can I create log or where is it?

When this problem happens, the pause button does not work to start timeshift, the disabled/unable symbol appears on the tv screen for some seconds....

What is your timeshift location? You get this behaviour if that location is not accessable or writeable.

/media/HDD/timeshift

There are more than 300GB free space and the recording always works well. It is an ext4 file system...

A timeout in the timeshift code before the disk is finished spinning up after it went into standby? That would explain that it does work after a zap...

The spin off time is 5 minutes. The problem is that I usually forget to test timeshift and I realize the problem only when I would like to use it. Mostly my wife meets this problem...

It is more the spin "ON" (or better "UP") time that is relevant here... But why do you really need contantly a timeshift.... it will use extra power current, let your harddisk make extra noise or is 'eating' USB sticks or flash(cards)... and usually when zapping you never can watch something back...

I just tested it here this afternoon.... here it always starts....

Maybe consider to extend the time of the start to a bit more then the spin up time might be helpfull?

Easy to test, disable the harddisk spin-down, and restart the box.

I wonder if you shouldn't remove this option, or move it to expert mode.

Most modern harddisks don't like a lot of startup / shutdown cycles, they last much longer if they just keep running. And in idle mode they hardly use any power anymore. And off course non-rotational devices don't need this option at all...

Are you using timeshift only on DVB channels?  It you test it on IPTV it won't work since you cannot (always) record IPTV streams.

2-3 times a week is not enough to debug it properly.
You can try to increase timeshift start delay to e.g 5 seconds and test whether this makes any difference.
Please report whether it works. If not, I maybe look at it. But at the moment I have not really time.

If you stop e2 manually(init 4) and start it then again, timeshift don’t start automatically. After first zap it works again. At least this was the case 1-2 or more years ago. Never understood why this happens as after reboot timeshift starts properly.
Maybe standby is similar. I never use standby so I haven’t tested it.

Could depend on the drivers that after a restart of e2 a timeshift will not start..... sometimes when you stop e2 drivers may not respond as expected.... and then after a restart of e2 something may ‘hang’...

I use spin down time because when the box in standby, the HDD will stop automatically after timeout. It worked fine on 7.3, I never had any timeshift problem.
I will test it, I will change spin down time...
