I'm currently on OpenPli 8.1 build date 2021-10-07.

In the menu I have the option of updating software and an option of flashing a newer image. What's the diff here i f I may ask? Is updating the software the same as going for a newer verison of 8.1?

It is not necessary to run after every update.
If everything is fine as it should, then you leave everything as it is.
The recommendation which is better (update or Flash) is difficult.
As an image builder, I would always keep my hands off updates.
I prefer the Flash.
For users it is always advisable to re-flash at the latest when there are kernel or driver updates.
For users, I would generally say that you take a quiet look at what has happened there every 4 weeks.

Normally there isn't much to update within the same release version, usually the satellites.xml, sometimes a softcam version or a bugfix for a plugin.

To go to a new version, it's better to flash. Also, the older the box, the more reason to flash instead of update, as update take up valuable flash memory space...

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.
