What connection type do you use? `Telnet or ssh?

In case you use ssh you first have to set a password for user root, without a password set, it won't be possible to connect by using ssh.

By default an OpenPLi image has no password. Note that this is diferent from a blank password.

SSH requires a password, and will not work by default. If you login with telnet, you will not get a password prompt.

If you login using telnet, and you get a password prompt, a password has been set by someone.

If you haven't done it, and you get a password prompt, yes.

On a standard OpenPLi, if you telnet into the box, you enter "root" at the username prompt, and you are logged in without being asked for a password.

You can use putty on box without passwd.

Or set in putty "Telnet" and port 22 or set SSH and port 23 and when it prompt password for login, press enter...

I would run autobackup and flash the receiver again, I think that's easier and will take less time.... ;)

Telnet is always working and as already said there is no default password in OpenPLi, but if you restore settings from another image it is possible that a password is set.

If you want to connect with ssh you first need to define a password, without a password you cannot ssh your box.
