Hi,

I am new to both satellite receivers and this forum. Currently trying to find a sat receiver with the features below. Any recommendation is appreciated. Sorry to ask if this is such a simple question, but I have searched the forum and unfortunately couldn't find all the answers I am looking for.

Important features
- Open source recent firmware, preferably Linux
- Ability to easily update firmware
- Ability to easily backup and export the configuration including the channels etc.
- DVB-S and DVB-T connection
- SATA or SSD disk support for recording
- Not a cheap clone, but a respected brand/product.
- Ethernet connection (at least 100Mbps)

Extra features
- Ability to play videos (mkv, iso, etc.) from USB (not a must)
- Gigabit Ethernet connection (not a must, 100Mbps might do too)

Thanks for your understanding and help in advance.

That would cover virtual all boxes available at the moment, most brands have a S+T in their offering.

Relevant requirements:

  • Does the disk have to be internal?
  • Requirement for a cardreader?
  • Requirement for a CI slot?

Those are much rarer to find...

Hi,

Yes, I prefer internal HDD. CardReader or CI slot are not my priorities, as I am currently after FreeToAir channels.

Regards.

Then you're limited to the two Dimitrij's gave you, I think.

AB Pulse 4K

VU+ Duo 4K se

Thanks for the suggestions Dimitrij,

With the "AB Pulse 4K", I'll also need to purchase the optional Dual DVB-c/T2 module I guess, which seems a clear alternative.

Regarding the "VU+ Duo 4K se", however, things got complicated for me : This model has 2 x FBC tuner slots and 1 x legacy tuner slot.

- Can I use a "DVB-T2 tuner" on the legacy slot ? The web site says this tuner is "For SoloSE/SoloSEV2/Solo4K/Duo2/Ultimo/Uno/Ultimo4K" and not "Duo 4K se". The "dual DVB-T2 tuner (MTSIF)" is For Ultimo 4K, Uno 4K SE, Duo 4K, but again not for "Duo 4K se". Though, I don't know if this (MTSIF) model will work with our country signals which are announced as DVB-T/DVB-T2.

- The FBC slots accept FBC DVB-S2X tuners, which I don't know what it is. I live in a country where the broatcasters are announcing their signals as DVB-T/DVB-T2 and DVB-S/DVB-S2. Would a FCB DVB-S2 tuner be able to receive non-FCB DVB-S2 signals ? Or, can I use "DVB-S2 tuner" on this FCB slot ?

According to the site, a DVB-S2 and DVB-T tuner can be connected to VU+ Duo2. Unfortunately, this model is not listed in "Supported software image download" of openpli.org.

Regards.

The VU+ website isn't very up to date.

A legacy slot is a slot in which you can fit tuner modules made for the non-4K models like the Duo2. MTSIF is the name of the new slot, which you don't have free as the FBC module occupies that slot.

In case of the Pulse 4K you indeed need to order it with the optional C/T tuner.

Both can be used with DVB-T2 without problems.

S2X means the tuners support some extensions to DVB-S2, which are mainly relevant for multistream transponders.

Thank you for the comments Dimitrij and neo.

Am I correct to say "DVB-S signals and channels can also be received through FBC DVB-S slot and FBC DVB-S module" ?

Regards.

What can be received depends on the tuner, not on the slot. So an FBC DVB-S2 tuner module is designed to receive S2 signals, as the name implies.

An FBC tuner has been primary developed for a wideband Unicable LNB, which can tune 8 transponders in parallel.

For legacy (DiseqC) setups, it can emulate two tuners with 6 additional loop-through tuners, which can tune 8 transponders in two quadrants of a satellite in parallel.

Thank you neo,

For every reply I receive here, I spend a day or so to search and learn new terms. Does a FBC tuner module require a Wideband LNB or can it also work with a Single or Quad LNB ? I am not sure if I can find Wideband locally.

Regards.

Yes, you can use a universal LNB with FBC tuners. But you won't get full usage/benefit of the FBC technology.

For info, you can use unicable/Jess LNB/switch on non-FBC tuners on all Enigma2 receivers.

Wideband LNBs can't be used on Enigma2 receivers unless you go through a switch that supports them.
