Hello, since I recorded a movie last week, the xtrend is freezing by booting on the main screen - red screen and the openpli 7.3 label.

I am able to connect over winscp and open the directories on the xtrend, however some of the subdirectories are not reachable and the ftp connection is brocken for a while. I am using a USB stick with /usb directory copied to the usb. If I start the device without the usb it starts and works but with an old openpli image - from January 2021, instead of USB stick version - 03.02.23. dmesg file is attached. Thank you in advance for your support!

thank you for the reply.

Sorry I am just a simple user and once installed do not mess with the operating system.

What means to develop: "...flash 8.3 or develop"?

If I have to install a new image, 8.3 instead of 7.3, does this means I will loose all the plugins, already installed on the flash expander under /usr directory?

May I just upgrade the existing image 73 to the new one 8.3 or should format the xtrend and start over from beginning?

Is there a user guide how to flash new image (with or without existing and installed flash expander)?

Thank you all for the reply!

Hi.

The fact that you have lost all plugins and settings depends on the exact procedure you used when "installing" (or updating) the new OpenPLi 8.3. You have to write here in the discussion how exactly you proceeded.

@littlesat meant that you probably installed OpenPLi 8.3 or development / test version.

Unfortunately, OpenPLi 8.3 is already based on the newer Python3. Just in the last few months, the time has come when, unfortunately, the Enigma2 GUI distributions switch to the Python3 platform (programming language), instead of the previously used Python2. So you also need new plugins and reinstall them to newer ones... so that they support Python3 (and not the outdated Python2). Support for the Python2 language has already been definitively terminated. Further, only the Python3 language is being developed.

Flashing is a term used to refer to a type of memory that has been used for decades. This is a group of memories called the so-called "flash" (today, for example, in USB sticks, SD cards, internal memory disks in set-top boxes... and the like). That is why it is also called "flashing" among experts - i.e. installing or uploading new firmware to this type of memory (flash memory). It is an old, common, albeit incorrect term. Today, flash memory is a common thing, but years ago there were many types of memory (in different devices) and in order to make it clear what you need to do with a specific device, they talked about "flashing" the firmware to the device.

By the term "develop", it was meant that if it is not a version of OpenPLi, which is only a test version (beta / alpha) in development... intended only for testing - and this version is intended only for experienced users and software developers. These "develop" versions (test versions) of OpenPLi can contain a huge number of errors (BUGs). And maybe that's the reason why your set top box won't start.

In any case, you should back up all necessary settings. For example, backup selected channels with DreamboxEdit. Also make a backup if you use a softcam + its configuration. Finally, you don't need plugins, because they can be downloaded from the OpenPLi feed server or from third-party sources on the Internet (if they are trusted plugins, of course).

Thank you, S3n0 for your time and effort to provide me with this detailed information!

It is very useful for me, as I am not familiar with OpenPli, Enigma and linux general.

I did not install 8.3, instead since 2021 I am using 7.3 (last OS update 03.02.23) with FlashExpander plugin and this worked well until last weekend.

Since then the xtrend is freeizing by booting on the boot logo display.

I am still able to connect over ftp (winscp) and see/edit directories on xtrend, however it is not possible to telnet to the device (connection to host lost).

Once I disconnect the USB with FlashExpander, the xtrend is booting normally, but with OS update from 2021 and the user profile from 2021.

My question here is if it is worth to try to repair the USB device or should I better install the 8.3 Version?

If I have to install 8.3 and if I understand you right, I should install a clear version of the OpenPLi OS (because of Pyton 3 and not 2 anymore) and manually install needed plugins, like Softcam, etc.

Generelly for me will be helpful to read somewhere which role plays OS (OpenPLi, Newnigma2, etc.), what is the correlation with Enigma and how are they structured, similar to structure of the Windows devices - HW platform->BiOS->Windows OS->applications->Desktop background picture, etc?

I have beed adviced in another treath to buy a new receiver, but there are a lot of manufacturers and I am a little confused about.

I own a dreambox DM800 (not sure if SE, anyway a genuine one) and xtrend Et4000.

I read about VU+, but I saw in the STB comparison that p.E. VU+ & xTrend & Dream Multimedia are EOL/End of sale.

I need a smartcard slot and softcam plugin support, as well as a good resolution for a 65" tv.

Thank you in advance for the reply!

Enigma2 is only a graphical user interface (GUI) that is programmed in the Python language. This Python language runs on a Linux system. Of course Linux is a stripped down little version... in these Linux set-top boxes. Booting takes place via some small CFE boot-loader in these set top boxes. It boots Linux from the flash memory after turning on the set-top box. And after starting Linux, the Enigma2 GUI (developed in Python language) will of course also start.

If your set-top box "freezes" already at the boot logo, do you mean the logo of the device (set-top box manufacturer) or do you mean the Enigma2 logo (in your case OpenPLi)? Because if the set-top box stops at the device logo, it may also be a HW problem with the device. When you mention flash expander, for example, a "stuck" can occur in the USB memory stick or in the connected MMC slot or SD card and the like (flash expansion).

Thank you, s3n0 for the information.

So, CFE boots the stripped Linux OS from flash memory and Linux OS then starts Enigma2 - the graphical interface.

What role has the OpenPLi (or OpenaTV, etc.) in this process?

Is this the stripped linux version?

My STB freeze on the Enigma logo, if I am not wrong - please take a look at the attachment for details.

The USB stick should be okay, because:

- I attached it to my laptop and I am able to read/write the "/usr" directory saved on the device.

- Once the STB is started without USB stick, it works with the primer account and then I connect the USB device in working stand and click on the Flashexpander plugin I can see that the USB storage is available - see the second screenshot for details

A bit of history:

In general every development group creates their own Embedded distro. The OE-Alliance has been created by teams not having the expertise to do so, so several, like OpenViX, OpenATV, etc, use the same Linux distro.

Enigma2, the graphical interface, was originally created by Dream Multimedia, with an open source GPL licence.

When Dream announced (in 2011?) that would change to a closed source license, PLi created a public fork of the code to continue public open source development. VU+ also did this, for their own hardware.

Later others copied PLi's code and started making other changes, so that we now have quite a few different versions of "Enigma2".

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

If you keep seeing the OpenPLi logo, and the remote doesn't respond, it means Enigma2 didn't start, or crashed when starting.

The network should be operational at this point so you should be able to telnet into the box (user: root). After login, issue the command "dmesg" and post the output here, so we can have a look for any startup errors.

What role has the OpenPLi (or OpenaTV, etc.) in this process?

OpenPLi, OpenATV, OpenHDF, BlackHole, VTi, ....... and many others are just names for various derived Enigma2 GUI distributions. As @WanWizard already wrote from a historical point of view, Enigma2 from Dreambox was among the first manufacturers when their firmware was freely distributed and easily available to the public. Later, other versions of Enigma2 were developed, such as OpenPLi, OpenATV and many others are freely distributed and constantly upgraded by enthusiasts from the IT world with knowledge of DVB technologies. The Dreambox manufacturer, however, has locked down its latest firmware and Enigma2 GUI (DreamOS) versions, and these new versions are no longer available to the public (it is forbidden to modify their source code by a third party). However... the old Enigma2 core is still in development (as open source - constantly improved and updated).

However, not all Enigma2 distributions have good support (updates) for various Linux set-top boxes, as there are already many manufacturers of these set-top boxes today. OpenPLi and OpenATV are, I think, among the most popular and the most stable.

My STB freeze on the Enigma logo, if I am not wrong - please take a look at the attachment for details.

The USB stick should be okay, because:

- I attached it to my laptop and I am able to read/write the "/usr" directory saved on the device.

It is difficult to advise where the problem arose. If you can connect to your set-top box via LAN, via FTP connection, that would be best. There you can find and copy the file "/var/log/messages" or "/var/volatile/log/mesagges". This file contains basic Linux diagnostic messages (system errors, initialization or disconnection of peripheral devices, etc.). It's actually similar to the dmesg command, as @WanWizard already advised you.

It would also be good if you could download and operate PuTTY app from the internet. It is also used for terminal connection to your set-top box, via a LAN network. You can find the IP address of the set-top box on your WiFi router (if you have access to it !). You will then use this IP address to connect to the set-top box in PuTTY. Then you select the "Other : Telnet" protocol and connect to the set-top box. The login name is "root" and the password is probably empty (press enter). Then run the Enigma2 startup diagnostics there. So, enter commands for debugging OpenPLi / Enigma2:

init 4; sleep 5; killall -9 enigma2; ENIGMA_DEBUG_LVL=4 enigma2 > /tmp/e2debug.log 2>&1

After entering the commands in the terminal (PuTTY), wait a while (1-2 minutes). And then again with the help of the FTP connection, download the file "/tmp/e2debug.log" to the PC and insert this file into the discussion here. There it will be displayed probably the error of your Enigma2 / OpenPLi

In my opinion, the fault could be precisely in the flash-expander feature. The files on the flash expander are probably damaged or, on the contrary, some are missing. Flash expander is unfortunately not a very good solution. It is better to buy a new set-top box (with more free internal flash memory / flash disk).

As for the conditional access card or CI+ interface and HW module, it's more complicated. It depends on which provider you use and whether its DVB card can also work in universal card slots (in the UNI-reader), which are found in ordinary Linux set-top boxes. If so, then just install a suitable softcam in Enigma2 + configure it. If your provider does not have a card that you insert into the UNI reader, then you need the entire CI+ module and the start-up of the entire CI+ module in the set-top box. In both cases, however, the configuration is not simple.

Also... if you are currently using a softcam, you should back up its configuration (for example, with the help of an FTP connection, you copy these important files from your set-top box to your PC). But even that is difficult for someone who has no experience with set-top boxes, and you should have someone who knows how to service it for you.

Does closed source license means that on new devices, like DreamBox seven UHD, it will not be possible to install OpenPLi or any other similar OS?

Hello WanWizard,

without attached USB, I am able both: FTP and putty to the device, so I attache the dmesg output from the device without USB stick.

I also attached other files, I found in the /home/root directory, which are written last days.

Changed the extension, as I am not allowed to upload files without extension.

Once booted, I am able to attach the USB stick and check the FlashExplorer, showing that application is up and running.

If I try to reboot with attached USB stick, the device freeze at OpenPli logo.

After freeze, I am able to ftp to device, but not able to putty - the windows of putty just appear and disappear from the windows desktop screen.

Thank you s3n0 for your continious support and patience in leading me in the STB world!

Starting from the beginning:

"However... the old Enigma2 core is still in development (as open source - constantly improved and updated)." - does this means, that devices with new Enigma (3, if I am not wrong?) will be not possible to modify and use in OpenPLi & OpenATV distributions?

If this is so, than isn't it better to stay with an old device, with Enigma2 Version, which to be manipulated, instead of buying a new device, which can not be reconfigured with open source?

"There you can find and copy the file "/var/log/messages" or "/var/volatile/log/mesagges"." - I see the file messages and I see date modified 09.05.23, 13:27, but once opened, I see only lines from January the 1st.

However, the file is attached in my previous post to WanWizard.

"Then you select the "Other : Telnet" protocol and connect to the set-top box. " - this is only possible if I boot the device without USB stick, with USB stick and freeze Logo I am not able to login to the device, as described in the post to WanWizard above.

"Flash expander is unfortunately not a very good solution. It is better to buy a new set-top box (with more free internal flash memory / flash disk)." - xTrend et4000 is a good receiver with HD resolution, card slot and OSACM support and flash expander has worked for about 2 years now. If I am compelled to reinstall the OpenPLi, I will take 8.3 version and will replace FlashExpander with Plugin Mover. However a new STB is not easy, first because I am not sure which device has mentioned above options and second, because I am mostly using an adobe application for watching TV and this device is mostly for recording some broadcasts, which I am not able to watch with the android application.

Are there canals with 4K, that a worth buying a new device, like DreamBox seven UHD, or are the old xTrend & DreamBox DM800 HD PRV qualitative enough?

" It depends on which provider you use and whether its DVB card can also work in universal card slots" - I am using Bulsatcom - bulcrypt card. It is a rather old technology, but still in use by the provider.

"Also... if you are currently using a softcam, you should back up its configuration" - this is done. You are right, it is not simple and took a lot of time to find out how to configure and proceed, I was/ I am lucky to have a friend who help and support me in situation where I am lost and do no know how to resolve a problem with OSCAM.

How did you manage this?

/usr/bin/enigma2: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.1.0.2

you can try reinstalling it with

Not much info in your log files, your issues all point to the device your flash is expanded to not working, not working properly, or not being available on time, so critial system files are missing.

After freeze, I am able to ftp to device, but not able to putty - the windows of putty just appear and disappear from the windows desktop screen.

Make sure you select telnet as protocol, PuTTY defaults to ssh, which is not enabled if you have not explicitly set a root password.

"However... the old Enigma2 core is still in development (as open source - constantly improved and updated)." - does this means, that devices with new Enigma (3, if I am not wrong?) will be not possible to modify and use in OpenPLi & OpenATV distributions?

If this is so, than isn't it better to stay with an old device, with Enigma2 Version, which to be manipulated, instead of buying a new device, which can not be reconfigured with open source?

Enigma2 is an established and stable name for a Linux set-top box graphics add-on. Take it as it is :).

Dreambox continues to develop their own Enigma2 version. They use their own, new kernels as the basis in Enigma2 (OE 2.5, OE 2.6 kernels, etc.).

Open source Enigma2 such as OpenATV, OpenPLi and many other open source Enigma2 ... are built on the old OE 2.0 kernel from the old Enigma2. However, they are still UPDATED and FULLY FUNCTIONAL!

The differences in the core of Dreambox and "open source" are only minimal... especially from the developers' point of view. So you may not even be interested. I personally already had a problem with the plugin not working properly on OE 2.5 for some specific, ridiculous reasons. The new graphic interface in the new Enigma2 cores, under the new Dreambox, use a little stricter or distinct methods and classes. For example, there is a stricter (different) way to define the font size in the configuration widget (in plugins it is the Screen layer, as a class for the list of items - in the configuration of a specific plugin). And there they then set up problems for maintaining compatibility - from the point of view of the plugin developer. However, this may not interest you. The new Dreambox, simply written, only uses its own Enigma2 and its source code is closed / inaccessible / non-public.

xTrend et4000 is a good receiver with HD resolution, card slot and OSACM support and flash expander has worked for about 2 years now.

Yes... and that's exactly what I'm writing. Although there are problems with the flash-expander. For example, if you want to reinstall the firmware (OpenPLi Enigma2), it is a big problem, using a flash-expander. You should properly throw away the flash-expander. Perform a clean OpenPLi flash again. Then connect the flash-expander (USB memory stick) and repeat the procedure for expanding to this so-called "flash-expander" (expanding / moving some files to a USB memory stick). It is ideal to use the procedure intended for OpenPLi that you have installed.

You don't need a Dreambox device. They are very expensive. It is better to buy Vu+, whose price is much lower and they are of very high quality. However, you have to find an alternative with the same features that you need and that you have used so far. For example: 4K support and H.265 support, UNI-reader as 1 free card slot, HDMI 2.0 output, type of DVB-S2 tuner, external IR sensor for RCU (if you want to throw the set-top box behind the TV and output only IR outside sensor for RCU) ... and similar details.

Alternatively, you can buy any other brand of set-top box, for example: Octagon, Zgemma, Edision, Formuler, ... . However, you have to make sure that everything you need to use is included in it - just like it was in the previous set-top box (for example, the type of DVB-S2 tuner). By the way, then you don't even need a flash-expander, because in the new set-top boxes you already have these internal flash drives with a capacity of at least 256 - 512 MB (or more). If OSCam worked in your current old set-top box, if your decoding card worked well in the UNI-reader, then there should be no problem in the new set-top box either. You must have a backup of the old OSCam settings, just to be sure.

I see the file messages and I see date modified 09.05.23, 13:27, but once opened, I see only lines from January the 1st.

However, the file is attached in my previous post to WanWizard.

The date 1/1/1970 is a Unix date. The time after turning on the set-top box (if there was a power failure) is reset. No one cares about the date. It is important that the file is current. And he is really up-to-date. It is determined by the time of individual actions, from the time the device is turned on, and this deviation time should always be entered in the file at the beginning of each record (each line).

"Then you select the "Other : Telnet" protocol and connect to the set-top box. " - this is only possible if I boot the device without USB stick, with USB stick and freeze Logo I am not able to login to the device, as described in the post to WanWizard above.

In that case, it means a definite system "crash". You probably have to flash everything again... cleanly... without using the Flash-Expander feature. Then, after installing, reinstall everything (plugins and configuration). And also insert a USB key and use the procedure to install the flash-expander feature in your OpenPLi.

Perhaps it would help to copy (with the help of FTP) everything from the USB key (flash expander) back to the internal flash drive (in the set-top box). But this probably won't be possible, because the contents of the directories on the USB stick take up too much disk space.

In my opinion, the error will be in the system files... that is, some files were not found in the internal flash drive or vice versa, they were not installed or found on the USB stick. Half of the system files are moved to the USB key and when you pull it out of the device, it logically represents a system crash. On the contrary, if you return it back... the USB key is present in the device, but it may not contain all the necessary files.

So in conclusion... in my opinion... in your case, the installation of the new OpenPLi + while using the mflash-expander (as an external system directory, located on a USB stick) failed. And now a complete new installation of OpenPLi - without using a USB flash-expander - is required as the first step. Then, as a second step, if everything succeeds, you can insert a clean USB key into the device or format it in advance (or the procedure will take care of it, for the use of a flash-expander) and perform actions to expand the internal flash drive with this USB external flash drive (i.e. function as a flash-expander).

Also this error:
/usr/bin/enigma2: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.1.0.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
...says some file is missing. You probably also have to connect a USB flash expander to the set-top box. And then work on the problem further. The strange thing is that after that the terminal connection no longer works. Apparently, when you connect a USB flash expander, the Linux system loads some old and incompatible system files into memory and freezes :). I do not know :). It's just my rough estimate :).

Of course, it is possible to debug the set-top box via its external serial port and also by connecting with the help of PuTTY (not as "Session" but then as "Connection -> Serial"). But not every set-top box includes this RS232 - serial port.

Blah blah blah... etc. :-D ... Sorry, I don't think this belongs in the discussion forum anymore... you should deal with this personally with someone who knows Linux set-top boxes and who would do all this for you.
