Default there is no password so the telnet login works with root as user.

If you want to use a password then first use the command passwd and from that moment you can use SSH with user and new password.

or install the rootpassword plugin and set the password using your remote.

To be clear, SSH will not work until you set a password. Telnet will.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Hi guys. Why did you unpin it ?! :-D I mean this one FAQ about entering the initial password. You could leave this topic pinned :-D.

First of all, you probably need to log in via the Telnet protocol and not via the SSH protocol. SSH will also require a previously set password for data encryption. However, the password is not set by default - in many cases, that is, with most Enigma2 distributions.

1. connect with a terminal connection via the Telnet protocol:

- the username is always: root

- there is only an empty space as a password: (press the ENTER key)

2. set a new password in the terminal, with the command:
passwd

Then you can also use the SSH protocol with a password.

I have a vuplus duo with openpli loaded:

It presents the web interface at 192.168.68.61 with the following info:

Devicename: dm8000 Enigma Version: OpenPLi 2010-10-10-master Image Version: openpli-2010-09-24 Frontprozessor Version: VNone Webinterface Version: 1.6.2

telnet from an Ubuntu box presents the login , but cannot authenticate with a blank password.

$ telnet 192.168.68.61
Trying 192.168.68.61...
Connected to 192.168.68.61.
Escape character is '^]'.

PLi openpli vuduo

vuduo login: root
Password:
Login incorrect
vuduo login: root
Password:
Login incorrect
vuduo login: root

Connection closed by foreign host.

Anybody can help.

I don't know why it doesn't work for someone when everything is fine for me. Via the Telnet protocol, I connect just fine with the loginname root and the password empty (ENTER) and I can change the password to the required one.

- set-top box: Vu+Solo SE V2

- enigma2 image: OpenPLi 8.3 (build 2023/10/18) - new clean installation

openpli 8.3-release vusolose

vusolose login: root
root@vusolose:~#
root@vusolose:~# passwd
New password:
Retype new password:
passwd: password updated successfully
root@vusolose:~#

In a standard OpenPLi, you will not get a password prompt, as no password is set. This is different from a blank password, which does give you a prompt on which you have to press Enter.

So if OpenPLi prompts you for a password, someone has set one.

This is usually the case if someone else has installed it, often in combination with some illegal sharing or IPTV subscription. In that case, chances are the plugin can't be installed too, usually a PIN is defined, or the feeds are disabled.

Thanks for the pointers and yes Wanwizard you were spot on!

A wild guess "vuduo" worked as it must have been set by the previous owner.

Of course you do... because you're using an old OpenPLi-4 build. Often unfortunately modified by third parties - intended for older types of set-top boxes.

However, for your old Vu+ Duo, there is still an official new firmware on the OpenPLi website - you can download it normally in the DOWNLOAD section :-). So you don't need the old and modified build version of OpenPLi-4, as long as there is an official version for your set-top box.

Even though the old set-top box is already dead, because the hardware manufacturer no longer supplies drivers for this set-top box, the OpenPLi development team tries to keep supporting the older set-top box... until... as long as it is possible .
