A question for the experts !

Can you resize the FB ( Frame Buffer) ? instead of fixed 512 Mb , two variants :

- 128 Mb as for viewing in 1080p as most of us does !

and some Kodi and what else requests extra RAM !!!

- 512 Mb as for viewing 4K channels

A fixed maximum allocation RAM for FB was the worst

idea Broadcom has !!! is unique !

Technically, sufficient frame buffer is more important than a lack of frame buffer.
What's the point in reducing it?
If there is a lack of memory, as I know well from the sh4 and the old mips receivers, then the discussion seems appropriate, but here with the h51 there is no lack of memory.

Well ! running Kodi in a decent manner could be one !

upgrading with Ofgwrite is slow because of small memory

for archiver , most of IPTV applications need buffereing ...

None of the above would benefit from changing the framebuffer.

Quite the opposite.
If you come to the conclusion that the respective memory area in the multiboot is too small, then a change would be necessary.

The problems you describe have other reasons.

Kodi would potentially benefit from having swap enabled.
IPTV cannot be mentioned in this context.
The stream can be logged and the display of the stream will never be a memory problem.

well ... is matter of opinion !

- kodi with swap is slow and unstable

- packing and unpacking archives is RAM dependent !

- 100 Mb free RAM was  OK 10 years ago !

I think the Mutant HD51 was released in 2016? And surely it existed in some form before that, so it is around 8-10 years old. The Mutant HD51 is also advertised to have a single GB of ram. I think the minimum suggestion for Kodi on a fta receiver today is 2GB ram minimum.? No wonder it has problems.

A fta receiver is primarily for reception of satellite signals. Trying to load and run media programs such as Kodi onto any fta receiver, especially an old fta receiver like the HD51 with low ram to me is crazy.  Much better to buy a decent media box for such purposes that will run Kodi and other things the way they are supposed to run.

Even more modern boxes like the Dual 4K have only 1.5GB memory available for the OS.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Mut@ant HD51 is an excellent STB ! unfortunately penalized by

a stupid mistake ! no other modern STB allocate static 512 Mb RAM

for Frame Buffer ! Make it better will help DVB to survive ! otherwise,

as we see ... is dying every day a little !

Kodi was never ment to run on an STB! An STB is not a Media player! That some Media can be player back is because of development in Enigma2.. It's a bonus...

Eh... Like I wrote, the Qviart Dual 4K, which is a recent box, also has 512Mb reserved memory. And this is not only reserved for the framebuffer, the framebuffer is only HD size, even on 4K boxes.

The framebuffer isn't used for video, it is only used for the UI overlay. For example, there is also memory reserved to store video snapshots in case of PiP (which is why the HD51 has the boxmode that allows you to free up memory by disabling PiP).

Which will not become available in user space btw, it remains reserved for 4K purposes.

Do not keep living in the past. Modern stb can perform this task just fine.
Just a matter of implementation.

Hehehe....

Sounds a bit like "64Kb ought to be enough for everyone" :)

The HD51 is almost 10 years old, with an old 2-core ARM CPU, and only 512Mb memory. That requires quite a bit of tweaking to run Kodi, especially the CPU and memory hungry parts.

On top of that, streaming media requires a proper TCP stack, which STB's in general don't have. Most drivers for example miss scatter/gather functionality, so they require consequtive blocks of memory for buffers, which are harder to come by over time.

Everyone here would be happy if you would justify these statements by participating in the well-known Git sources.

It has no influence on the topic creator's original question.
Because by reducing or changing the frame buffer you will not gain anything in terms of the functionality of Kodi or streams.

In contrast, this will create problems in the normal operation of the receiver.
