Standard 9.0 image takes almost all space on the flash, so it is impossible to install needed extra packages.
To cope with this I manually remove unwanted packages after upgrade (opkg --autoremove remove enigma2-plugin-extensions-openwebif), install extra packages, and finally restore backup settings. This is very inconvenient and risky.

Please consider removing a few non-critical packages to make a smaller image.

Best regards,
Michał

We're not going to do that, if you want that, you can do that yourself.

Or build yourself a custom stripped image, we can't decide what you need and don't need, that is different for every user. I know most people would be angry if we would remove the web interface...

For these old low-flash boxes, OpenPLi 9 will (most likely) be the latest release, the current development image for OpenPLI 10 is even bigger, and won't even flash anymore.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Many answers to your question can be found in our new and improved wiki.

Buying new electronics is always tempting, but my Uno works surprisingly fine. :)

OpenWebif was just an example that works for me. My suggestion was a minimal system that will work for everybody at the cost of manually installing a few extra packages. Note that user installed packages should be preserved during upgrade with settings restoration, so the problem of a missing software would happen just once.

On the other hand have you considered offloading parts of the system to another storage (internal drive or external usb)? OpenWrt, which also faces difficulties with low flash size, offers extroot, which allows to extend the system to external storage in a transparent way. Maybe something like that could be implemented in OpenPLi?

I really do appreciate supporting devices for so long, and OpenPLi should be praised for such approach. I hope there is still hope for the next releases. :)

We thought about it all, and decided against it.

The majority of our users are not computer savvy, most know just about enough to use a remote control. They don't visit the forums here.

These people need stable, working and functional images, not an image where a bag of tricks is needed to make and keep verything operational.

The people that do visit these forums, like yourself, are usually computer savvy, and can handle the back of tricks, and the potential fallback from it.

The problem with all those extender solutions is they tend to fail sooner or later (for example a USB device failing, or failing to be detected), and then, for the end-user suddenly the box isn't working as it should. User in panic, partner angry, and without means and knowledge to fix the problem.
