can someone please explain if Channel ID is the required filed in channels.xml file?

Just wondering if I create file with just service IDs as example below , then will it work? 

<channel>1:0:1:21e4:045f:0045:00c00000:0:0:0:</channel> 

Can some one please explain the use of Channels.xml and Sources.xml file and how they work together?

Lets say sources file downloads a epg for channel which isn't listed channels.xml file then will import process just discard that epg data ?

Basically , what I am asking is if I delete the channels I don't need from channels.xml file then will I be able to reduce the size of my epg.dat file?
