I have recently updated to the latest oPLi version and I miss the option "alternative" for colouring external subtitles. I believe this has been dropped when the new fonts have been added.

 

I am not happy at all with the way how subtitle tags are handled now by font switching.

 

Can you please reactivate the colouring option?

 

 

What has happened, iirc, is that the unofficial html tags <i> <b> and <u> where displayed as certain colours in the past. Now they are replaced by subfonts. Is that what you mean?

 

The disadvantage (as you already found out probabably) is that enigma2 only allows one font per text render call, so the whole line is shown as italic or bold (underlined is not supported at all). I also liked the coloured variant, but it seems many people dislike it, we've have had many requests to do it this way, even though it's imperfect.

 

The best option would be an option, indeed. But it's not that simple to implement (yes everything is, given you have enough time, but at least my spare time is already spent, maybe another dev likes to have a look).

Me too. I think we all are used to English subtitles, where colour is used all the time...

Dutch subtitles for the hearing impaired is also coloured. But apparently nobody ever sees them

 

I could imagine we'd want to switch to a less intrusive colour scheme though, like light yellow and light cyan, less saturated.

It was called alternative coloring pointing it replaces font changes (italic bold etc...) as work-a-round to colors... As we now after years can change the font (not exactly following all srt specs, but for 99.9% of the subtitles is should perform well) the alternative coloring work-a-round became obsoleted... That is why it is removed....

Well you call it obsoleted, but some people apparently prefer it (including me).

Yes that would be nice, but I've the code and it will make the code a lot less clean. Because e.g. the <b> tag now makes the whole element render in bold subfont and then all the <b> and </b> tags are removed. With colouring that is not what you want.

Would be even nicer If both modes could co-exist, with separate on / off option...

 

That way, every personal preference would be considered, including a combined style (i.e. coloured and bold font).

It was obsoleted because coloring italic, bold etc,., was a work-a-round at the moment I implemented it years ago. Dmm did start code to do this right but never finished it...

Of course the alternative coloring mode could be (re)added.. This is relativaly simple patch... I actually like it that you get used and like something that was actually intended as work-a-round....

Thanks littlesat. Good to see that "alternative" is back.

 

In a way, the coloured <u> tag and the new dialog colouring are also "alternative". In fact they complete this style.
May I suggest to include/move them into the "alternative" option? If there aren't any objections, of course...

One last thing... Could you please set up "alternative" as a separate option? By that, one would still have access to selecting the default subtitle colour. (white or yellow).

 

Also some colours would have to be re-defined:

 

 - default: white or yellow (as is)

 - dialog: yellow, cyan (as is)

 - italic: green (suggested)

 - bold: magenta (suggested)

 - underlined: red (suggested)

Sorry I really do not understand...

 

I analyzed a lot of subtitles I never found bold...

 

When making yellow I could only consider to fallback on a different alternative method...

 

I do not want to make too much options... I suggest you should simply be happy with alternative... all white and all yellow....

I agree. No more than 3 (separate) options:

 

 - default colour

 - coloured tags (including <u> and dialogs)

 - font switching

Default color is only for teletext???

There are separate settings for teletext and external subtitles.

 

You may have a point there to select either white, yellow or alternative. I'll leave that up to you.

 

I'd be more than happy if you could make the other changes mentioned above.

Teletext subtitles can have orriginal colors... Pango (srt) external subtitles not... they can have color change tags in the srt format, but this is rarely used and enigma2 does not decode them at all....

Yeah, I never encountered those colour tags either, I think we can ignore them for now. Or maybe, to be on the safe side, simply filter them out.

BTW: Why do you call these subtitles Pango? I believe the correct name of this format is SubRip.
