Here is a patch for automatic timeshift start. It's disabled by default. You can enable it in the settings (user interface).
This might lead into a discussion:
The "stop timeshift" dialog is not shown until the user really used the timeshift (= pressed pause or did a fast rewind). So you can zap without problems. Once you have really used timeshift (regardless of whether you're currently at the live point or not), the dialog is displayed.
Reason for this: I like the dialog, but I don't like to see it everytime I zap and I also want to start timeshift almost immediately after zap to a channel to be able to save the whole program I was watching and not only a part.
If you don't like it, you can remove it without problems by removing the variable ts_min_once_activated.

Yes, there is currently no limit. And from my point there's no nice and easy solution for that. Only something like in pts plugin and I don't want to rebuild the plugin.
A nice solution for me would be to start a second timeshift after eg 2 hours timeshift and stop first timeshift after eg 5 minutes. Then delete first timeshift file after again 1-2.hours. But starting a second timeshift is currently not possible and not easy to implement.
And deleting x bytes at the start of a file is unfortunately not possible.

It's much more difficult. You need to build a new binary. If you don't have experiences with this, please wait until the patch was added by the pli guys(which may take several days) and make then an online update.
