Is that already actually done in this casze? I mean, OS taken by a corp and made into closed source?!?

If it is - it's abominable! In that case - boycott!!!

It's closed source. So nothing can be proven. So I don't make statements or point fingers.

But when you see features appear that look the same and do the same, as I said, it makes you wonder if someone really thought "that is a good idea, let me build that too", and do that from scratch without looking at whats openly available...

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Blackhole has an Enigma2 image too. On top of the closed source (i.e. binary only) image from DMM. Doesn't say anything...

Ahem... Seem to mix up two threads here... Ignore what I wrote (except the part about the fastscan code).

Prismcube is supposed to be using Open Source software See a.o. http://update.prismcube.com/
I have no idea if they really are.

Blackhole (as well as VTi) are well known for violating all Open Source licenses.

From what I can see on their website, the XMBC part is open.

But the rest, and that includes all DVB stuff, isn't there. XMBC needs to talk to a DVB backend to provide the TV and PVR features.

So, while waiting for the definitive answer to the above question of appropriating Open Source code and closing it or not.... let's go back to some of the earlier, pertinent questions:

1) A/V Codecs supported?

2) Consumption?

3) EXT2/3/4 supported?

4) Recording to NTFS?

5) HDMI 1.4?

6) USB 3?

7) 2xHD PiP?

8) How many (HD) channels can we record at the same time?

9) Which emus/CS SW?

Etc. etc.

Thanx!

ad 8: That's the easy-to-answer one, as it is stated on their homepage: 'DVB-S2 TWIN PVR: Two concurrent recordings while Time Shifting one additional channel'.

Regarding Open Source: At prismcube.com a link to http://prismcube.com...w.html?serial=1 states 'Source code for Prismcube Ruby (as required by GPL)'.
It's not something I can check, but doesn't this hold all the sources? Or is there again a closed part in it?

So now the question pops up: is a closed source addition to an open source image allowed?
I noticed this very question around the PrismCube has been asked on several forums, with quite divers answers.

Linux itself is open source; however it is quite often used in (embedded) (semi-)closed source systems. That looks like the situation of the PrismCube. If that would be against the license, that would apply to a huge number of systems.

Why not?

E.g. there are enough plugins closed source.....

If they are different components, for example a separate library (that is not compiled in) or a separate application, the answer is "yes, the GPL license allows that". Like it is allowed to use closed-source drivers in Linux.

Yeah, but things that are not allowed happen often enough, so that doesn't mean anything.

So using this definition, would the PrismCube be Open/CLosed/Partially Open?
And the addition of the DVB-aplication(s) on top of an Open Source system is allowed in this case?

Or  as Pop_eye asked/stated earlier:

Will the linuxtv api still be used with this project or not ?

There are two aspects:

1. if the answer is YES - then the tuners and all the pvr / ca interfacing code should be needed to be released aswell.

It is exactly this portion which both DM and vuplus are both failing to do since their code is interfaced with broadcom proprietary api.

And since much of this code is using dvb-core components..guess what ? They are breaking GNU license.

2. if the answer is NO - then another layer of interfacing should needs to be built from ground to respect XBMC requirements.

This is exactly what gorski and others are reading between the lines...this is what open source is all about.
