Hit there,

My Vu+ duo died yesterday due to lightning induction on the powergrid. The harddisk seems to be ok, but an attempt to read it in windows xp using ext2fs and other tools show the disk as being RAW. Used an digitus usb adapter cable to connect the disk. In windows disk management it shows up as healty, but I can't open it.

I had an older pli image on the machine  Version 2.??

Still lots of movies on there I would like to get from the disk.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi,

i guess that the thing to try is to boot your PC with a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu or whatever) and see what you can access on the HDD.

If a check disk is needed the Live CD Linux version will be able to do it.

Mount as read only! Try to 1st recover data to other media. Check disk can destroy data you want to recover!

Thanks.

I will try the read only option first, after I get linux on a bootable cd.

As I'm in the market for a new box, which is a better option: Vu+ Duo2 or Xtrend ET 10000 or is the Xtrend ET 8000 a good option since it is a bit cheaper.

It all depends on what you want/need. You could take a look at http://wiki.openpli.org/comparison

Hi there,

I tried Ububtu on an USB stick and was pleasently surprised. It works very well. Unfortunatly mounting of the disk did not. I'm no expert on Linux so need a little help here.

With sudo fdisk -l I found the disk:

Disk /dev/sdd: 2000.4 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30400 cylinders, total 488378646 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdd1               8  3907029167  2743214752   83  Linux

I think it has a partition on there (sdd1) but when I try to mount I get an error:

sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sdd1 /media/vuplusduo
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdd1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

With dmesg I get:
[ 2337.167672] EXT4-fs (sdd1): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem

What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Thanks.

The filesystem is corrupt and can not be recognised.

Sorry. :(

Maybe there are some repair tools that can fix the file system?

You states that your previous image was still 2.x and I don't think that it already use ext4 so try to mount it as ext3 no 4 and if ext3 don't work try ext2 then.

I have tried ext2 and ext3 first but they don't work either, so I will look into disk check actions first.

Found http://linuxexpresso...lock-in-ubuntu/ which seems to give similair info as link provided by mattiL.

Always try the alternative superblocks before giving up on an ext file system. See manual page of e2fsck.

I have tried several of the backup superblocks but no dice. Have to wait until I get an other same size or bigger disk to try foremost or other recovery tools. The internet is great by the way. So much info to be found.

Thanks for al the pointers.
