Hi,

I am now a little pissed off because it is the third HDD that seems to have been damaged during the last 2 years in my ET9000. First it was a 2.5", then a 3.5" and now a USB disk.

Could it be o coincidence or is my ET9000 somehow damaging them?

Anyway, I am now looking for the best option (ET9000, OpenPli 4.0) to record over network instead of buying a new disk. What is the protocol to go for? CIFS? NAS?

Can somebody please guide me as to how to set up the recording to my Win7 machine?

I have build my 2TB harddisk into my et9200 2 years ago (or 3?). I have no problems with it. I only added fan so that temperatures are not so high.

 

Is your Win7 machine also on?

My Win7 computer is on for about 6-8 hours every day. Whenever I will need to record something outside the 6-8 hours I will leave it on longer or even overnight.

No problem with that.

By the way, what 2TB disk are using?

It's a ST2000DL004 HD204UI. But as said it's quite old. 7700 hours running.

For CIFS I hope somebody else answers.

Harddisks tend to get somewhat hot in settopboxes which is not favourable for their lifetime. Also the same model harddisk may run for ten years and another one may be faulty in six month's time. There is really no prediction possible. So-always-backup or make a redundant configuration and run smart tests (including self tests regularly).

I also use two ET9000 with internal HDD without any problem but I also install fan since the very first day.

 

But I also join the question, globally what is the best protocol to mount a NAS share to record? (Since I have a Synology I can use many different protocols).

I have an et9000 with a HDD and a fan since fisrt day too, and no problems.

Robinson , your HDD is any Seagate model ?

There were some models, 3-4 years ago that needed firmware update

Well samba/cifs works; no question about that, but I find nfs been less of a troublemaker when connecting to my syno NAS. Please note that on 100 Mbps devices, the experience is not quite the same between lan and local HDD when under very heavy stress. On 1 Gbps boxes, it is virtually impossible to know if you are using one or the other. It is also probably time to say that you should NOT try that over Wifi, that is unless you like issues . I would also not record on a client device (ie win7 pc or the likes as mentionned by OP)

CIFS is nicer, it runs mostly in userspace. When an NFS server is unreachable it tends to 'hang' the client machines.

From what I understand, most ET9000 users do have a fan. OK, maybe it's about time for me to put it in?

1) Is there a special pin on the motherboard to connect it to?

2) What size fan do you recommend? Would it be different for 2.5" and 3.5" HDD's?

3) How do you mount the fan?

4) How do you control it (when to rotate and, possibly, at what speed)?

 

I have been recently using a USB HDD (SAMSUNG HM641JX) so overheating should not be an issue here but now I am thinking of going back to a 2.5" or 3.5" internal HDD and a fan.

 

By the way, if I run smartctl -a /dev/sda I get the following:

I had a 1.5T 3.5" in the et9000 for years without problems. Before that, it was in the dm8000 and now it's in the et8000. Never used a fan. It's still running and making lots of recordings.

Probably, take it out of the casing and attach it to a SATA port.

Anyone else can help set up CIFS? I would like to use the whole G: partition on my computer's HDD for temporary recording from ET9000.

Do I need a user and a password for CIFS to be set up? I understand I need to set up G: partition sharing on my Windows 7 machine?

Any advice please?

To emulate a SMART long selftest you can do this:

dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null

and let it run, it will probably over an hour to complete. If the prompt returns, it's ok. This is less thorough than a smart selftest, but anyways better than nothing.

I must admit I am struggling a little bit with German so what seems to be better? Mounting the fan under the HDD or "hanging" it over the HDD under the cover?

What air flow direction would be better? Blowing air towards the HDD or sucking it out?

By the way, is there really enough space to hang it below the cover? I guess it depends on the disk thickness unless the fan is not directly above the disk?

If you put the fan under the hdd, then I think that blowing from outside to inside is better (cool air should be sucked in at the bottom and hot air should be blowed out at the top).

My fan hangs under the cover (in the middle of the cover). Air flow is from inside to outside. It's not perfect because there are not many holes in the cover. And there is only few space for the fan.

I don't know whether you can hang the fan right over the hdd.

 

So if you get the thin fan like the scythe one (you need exactly that model or a fan with same dimensions), then I would put it under the hdd.
