 I've bought a DVB-S receiver. Nothing more. This job it does perfect in my opinion.

I can buy a  "DVB-S receiver" for 30€!! :lol: not 500€!

The product should always work as advertised, not having half of its advertised features missing... It's 500€, for f sake! This should had come perfectly tested.

Well, Correct, but i need the Tuners (hence the upgrade from the Ultimo), I really can't find any advertised features that are missing. I'm rather impressed actually with the stability. Even though i run a "secondary" image. Even the Add-on tuner i bought with it, worked out of the box. I don't get why people are so furious regarding this box.

Completely agree

"Quality" of scaling of SD to HD or 4k is always subjective. Hey, it's SD guys!

When setting 1080p or 2160p, deinterlacing of SD content is done by the STB. Most SD content is interlaced. If it is deinterlaced/scaled incorrectly, scaling and interlacing artifacts can be seen. Vu+ Solo 4K has problem when outputs SD content to 1080p or 2160p. On 1080i, where deinterlacing is done by the TV set, it is ok. So it is not "subjective", there are specific issues that need to be fixed. I remember VU+ Solo2 had similar issue at start, that's why I was running it at 1080i (and not 1080p) for quite some time. Eventually it got fixed.

Ah, that's why I do not see any problem with SD.

I always use 1080i as output and try to disable every type of processing done in the box.

I was told in another forum that TVs handle processing far better than receivers.

Assuming you have a 4K TV, when using 1080i on STB, this is happening:

576i => upscaled by STB => 1080i => upscaled and deinterlaced by TV => 2160p

When using 1080p on STB, this is happening:

576i => upscaled and deinterlaced by STB => 1080p => upsclaled by TV => 2160p

When using 2160p on STB, this is happening:

576i => upscaled and deinterlaced by STB => 2160p, TV does nothing.

Methods 2 and 3 do not produce good quality on VU+ Solo 4K. They should. Actually the best quality should be produced with option 3 for 4K TV and option 2 for 1080p TV.

Anyway, my comments were just to educate people about the possible issues of VU+ Solo 4K as an early product. I don't have an agenda against VU+ or VU+ Solo 4K, after all these comments come from someone who is an owner of 3 VU+ boxes (VU+ Duo2, VU+ Solo2 and VU+ Zero).

Never saw you as having an agenda against VU+ :-)

Just wanted to know, based on your experience, to whom let do the upscaling: box or TV?

I thought TV was best, but I am not an expert whatsoever .

Also deinterlacing is a subjective preference, just as well. The only proper way (closest to the original) to watch interlaced material is on a CRT tube. The combination of a progressive scan screen and a "de-interlacer" can never give the same experience. So whoever makes the deinterlacer must make choices.

If you're really die-hard-core about picture quality, you should consider decoding the media, deinterlace using an advanced software deinterlacer and then re-encode to a progressive frame rate. Just like video encoding, hardware can never be as efficient as a software implementation.

Anyway, when I want a good picture, I am not going to watch SD in the first place ;)

The best option is to have as less conversions as possible. So, the best would be to either have STB display 576i when SD content is used and let TV do both upscale/deinterlacing or have STB at TV's native resolution and let only STB do the upscale/deinterlacing. However, if you set STB to display 576i the menus will look a bit ugly (since they will be downscaled from 720p or 1080p resolution).

No, I can't live with 576i menus. Tried that, but it gives you blurry menus, and TBH I didn't see much improvement, if any.

To flame the Solo4k for its poor (it isn't in my opinion) SD performance is just not justified, most 1080p TVs have poor SD performance, eventually most UHD TVs will have poorer 1080i performance than HD sets.
As it is I have my Solo4k de interlacing and scaling everything to 2160p to my UHD set and I think it does a sterling job on good quality SD broadcasts, remember you can't polish a turd.
Previously I had my Duo2 scaling everything and my UHD TV de interlacing, I actually prefer the way I have it now.

As above, I think the 2160p upscales SD very well, but this is obviously subjective.

I think it's pretty obvious though, that if you watch alot of SD material it is never going to look great after watching HD or UHD content.

It's a bit like after DVD's came out, and then going back and watching a VHS tape, you wonder what the hell is wrong with the picture, and how did you ever watch something that bad.

Nobody wants to polish it. We just want to look at it the way it should look.

Without a working BSP layer there will be no image. And afaik VU+ hasn't made it yet.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Could you please explain for us mortals what the BSP layer is?

A BSP is an abstraction layer between OpenPLi and the hardware. It contains manufacturer and box/model specific hardware drivers, and provides a standardized DVB-API.  The code is usually completely closed source, and the manufacturer has to supply it.

You can compare it to the drivers you have in a PC operating system like Windows. If you have an HP printer, you need drivers from HP. If HP doesn't make them for your (version of) operating system, you can't print.

Likewise, if there is no BSP, OpenPLi is not going to run on the box.
