Have you already replace the capacitor in your ET-9000?
I have mentionned that when the capacitor start to fail the power supply on the USB port get troubles too.
But I also had in the past such HDD with a double cable the second cable was only to get more power use 2 USB port for the HDD.
You should try to insert a powered USB hub between your ET-9000 and your HDD.

No, I have not replaced any capacitors yet.
They look all right to me although I might not be able to recognize the signs of deterioration properly.
Attached is a photo from 2 years ago. Could somebody please indicate which of them are most susceptible and perhaps require replacement?
By the way, I will try and get hold of a powered hub. I used a 5.1V mobile phone charger but it does not seem to help too much.

Backup/copy all important files from the USB HDD. And format the SAMSUNG(HM641JX) on the ET9000. Most likely this should improve the situation.
It seems to have helped indeed.
Now I get FTP transfers of about 11 MB/s writing to disk and about 7 MB/s reading from it.
I wonder how long it will last.
By the way, I only reached this far with smartctl:
root@et9x00:~# smartctl -a /dev/sda1 smartctl 5.42 2011-10-20 r3458 [mips-linux-3.8.7] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net Vendor: SAMSUNG Product: HM641JX User Capacity: 640,135,028,736 bytes [640 GB] Logical block size: 512 bytes Device type: disk Local Time is: Fri Dec 25 12:48:39 2015 CET Device does not support SMART Error Counter logging not supported Device does not support Self Test logging
I don't think it is quite true because it seems to support SMART. CrystalDiskInfo still shows the disk as GOOD.

Regarding smartctl you can try to google whether it's possible to use or not.
It seems it is possible with -d usbjmicron option.
So this is how far I got now:

It looks like -d sat goes even further:

I see no obvious errors. Either the interface on the STB side (USB) or on the disk side (bridge) is slow. But how and why?

No, Sjaaky, I don't have a USB tuner or any other devices connected to the front USB slot.
For the moment, after re-initializing the disk it seems to be working OK (7 MB/s write and 11 MB/s read).
Maybe the filesystem on the HDD got screwed up during a power cut or something.

But that would not explain slowness.
