Yes, it works. And yes, by default. And no, not always.
Samba works with the old netbios broadcast system, which in Windows is deprecated since XP. It requires that the box and the PC are in the same workgroup, and it requires that it has a masterbrowser configured that both can use.
If you meet these criteria, the PC should query the master browser of the workgroup when you open the network (previously network neighborhood) and show you what it has found.
Regardless of this, you can always access the box from the explorer using \\<ip-of-your-box\Harddisk, or if ahavi does it's job, via \\et9000\Harddisk.
