You need to separate the phenomenon that the user experiences and the actual function.
The user experience is a dotted line on the top. Let's just call it that way, it's correct and obvious.

I couldn't agree more; the text is for users, not for technicians.
I seldom call the motor of my car an 'internal combustion engine' either, for the very same reason :)

Then come with a good text...

Then try "Cover white artefacts" /  "Avoid cover white artefacts" - or "Cancel cover white artefacts""

White artifacts is also a bad description... As it is still in fact and full theory "hide VBI area when visible.../ unhide VBI area when visible...)

If it does cover or hide... then I think hide is still better...

That VBI is technical that is logical... We also do not find something "user frendly" for DiseqC, DVB-S, DVB-C, HDMI, HDMI-CEC, DVI, etc.....

I couldn't agree more; the text is for users, not for technicians.

I fully agree... but many times you make it worse when you try to get around that...

Maybe just replace the VBI area to the dotted line on the top, as offered Erik?
I also think that VBI is a correct name, but users will not understand what it means.

Ok, then call it simply line on the top  ;).

Hide line on the top

Unhide line on the top

IMHO that would be the best option.

Hide line of noise on upper line? I think a native English speaker should have a try actually.

it are still VBI lines.... actually Visible VBI lines...

And we also do not rename Diseqc to switch that selects low noise band converters... ;)

So when you look at the sky you also say "hmm; lots of castellanus or lacunosus or lenticularis (or whatever it is at that moment)" today?
You should, you really should, because that's what they are :)

But if you do: don't forget to add a hint-text :)

""hmm; lots of castellanus or lacunosus or lenticularis (or whatever it is at that moment)"

Totally out of scope... ;)

There are a log of specific stuff and abriviations in the enigma2 ui... when we had such discussion for all of them it is getting an endless story...

they call it here black and white pulse

http://images.google...b23BJgQ9QEIaDAK
it can be seen on HDMI as well, not only over Scart, I would say
"hide VBI and WSS pulsing line on the top of the screen"
I originate Croatian, I don´t know how does it sound for native speakers, as you see they call themselves different way and sometimes they use different prepositions, "on", "at", "in" the top of the screen

This function simply draw a narrow window which hide the line on the top of the screen.
Is it really important what exactly is this line - VBI or WSS or something else?

I therefore propose to write just what this function does. Hide the line on top of the screen.

For ViX I've renamed this function to: "Hide dotted line on the top for this service" and "Remove 'Hide dotted line on the top for this service'". This seems to be well understood by all users, including the non-technical ones.

By the word....

Fact... it isn;t a dotted line at all... It is most of the time a dashed line... So ViX did it completely incorrect (LOL)....
