Hereby we announce that from tomorrow, OpenPLi will have JESS support.

For those not familiar with JESS, it's a system comparable to Unicable, but with extended capabilities (more positions, more user bands).

Users not employing Unicable or JESS equipment will experience no difference.

For users that have installed Unicable equipment, unfortunately, they will need to reconfigure their tuners. That's due to tuner configuration having changed. It's more logical and simpler now.  In the process, we added a pile of preconfigured Unicable and JESS switches, so most users will not have to enter all user bands separately; they can now just choose the appropriate switch model.

With courtesy of Jultec, which supplied us with a few JESS switches for this purpose.

As this project was quite complex I would like to thank all team members which have been involved with this project. Great job.

I seem to remember having seens this brand. But if not, don't worry, you can configure it manually, just enter all user bands and it will work (assuming your switch does implement everything according to the standard).

Why has this been called "JESS support" and not 'Unicable II support"?

After all it is Unicable II support, and JESS is just one of the brands using it.

"JESS" ~ "UNICABLE2" = "SCD2" = "EN50607""...

Probably we took JESS as this is the best readable to differentiate between UNICABLE and this "thing".  EN and SCD2.... is not user frendly and UNICABLE2 is just one thing added to UNICABLE

And Jultec, JESS, dis sponsor this project...

Well, Unicable II is the protocol, and that's what is supported.

JESS & Inverto & xxxx are just brands using the supported protocol.

EN... is the protocol... we choose simply the thing that makes the difference very clear...And Jultic was the manufacturer that initially did define the thing and created the EN... UNICABLE-II is even worser....

Actually... Jultec has developed this protocol, so they have every right to call it "JESS". Then they had it standardized by CENELEC as an EN... standard (which name nobody uses because it's far too long). Also Jultec never called it "Unicable 2", that's an invention of outsiders.

So, that's why we call it JESS.

It's like saying you support a Volkswagen while you actully supply petrol.

And indeed: the Unicable II protocol is defined in a DIN, just as Unicable is (and petrol as well).

Where did you find a DIN about UNICABLE-II

This is the DIN with Title... and it says... JESS....

  • DIN EN50607: JESS (Jultec Enhanced Stacking System) Einkabelsystem, Nachfolgestandard der EN50494: 2013/2014

I can only imagine other manufacturers do not want to named it JESS as the name of a competitor is in there.... ;)

I can imagine people being suspicious that we would engage into some hidden marketing/sponsoring here ;) But no, it's just that.

As previously correctly stated, the term "Unicable II" is not officially linked to the EN50607 European standard, but actually also Jultec recognizes that some manufacturers use different naming for this standard like "Unicable 2":

Yes, they're not stoopid of course. Other manufacturers will not quite be willingly to use a name with the brand of the competitor in it.

Just like the amd64 instruction set extension, which Intel calls "intel 64". But it's really amd64.

Erik, what branch was this merged from? It says merged from "jess" in the commit, but OpenPLi "jess" branch hasn't been touched since April 2016.
