Looking for some assistance regarding streaming remotely with vpn setup. I have installed openvpn onto my zgemma h2s and it seems to be working. I previously had ports opened up to box with no vpn. No ports are open now, I tried pre-set vpn service on sky router forwarding to box ip but it will not allow access to openwebif.

 

Will it be ok to reopen ports now that I have openvpn installed and running?

hi - start with this topic and show results of :

 

openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc

openssl speed -evp aes-256-cbc

 

Would not recommend to install openvpn on stb, though it would be interesting to know if it works OK.

Be advised you need at least 12-15Mbit for (U)HD-Streams ...

 

Anyway If ovpn is configured on 1194 ( default ) open that port in your router ( check port in server.conf ). Others can be removed obviously.

With help of folks here I am sure you will manage as they helped me out, but it is a steep learning curve I can assure you that ;-) .

 

But first thigs first ...

next question is what do you want to achieve , eg: stream to a mobile ( or tablet ) or to a 50" (U)HD TV over vpn?

If I am not mistaken the zgemma h2s does not have transcoding, does it?

It is possible to stream (U)HD between between two locations over ovpn without the need of transcoding, although in the end I used two separate N3150 Celeron boards with AESNI for openvpn2.4.

No single Zgemma receiver offers transcoding. They're all "budget" receivers.

please refer to this URL and all the way down is the answer you are looking for.

However if you are at home access settings ( customise on top of my head ) and either protect it with a password OR as you wish enable VPN.

 

If you want to stream from box to VLC on your laptop/desktop ( without transcoding ) an upload of 12-15Mbit for HD is required, for SD 8 should be sufficient.

using non-VDSL2 subscriptions or entry (cable) subscriptions the upload speed could be an issue ...
