How can I remove samba completely in openpli5?

In openpli4 it was "opkg remove sambaserver"

opkg remove samba

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Many answers to your question can be found in our new and improved wiki.

opkg remove samba

Yes okay.

''opkg remove --force-depends samba'' did the trick.

Something else. I have the harddisk (\\192.168.1.201\Harddisk) mounted in Windows 10 explorer.

In Windows 10 you can disable SMB1.0 (see screenprint), but when I do this the mount isn't available anymore. I have enabled the option again and now the mount does work again. So it seems the box can only be mounted using SMB1. Is there a possibility to use SMB2 here also (or is this possible in the coming OpenPLi 5)?

To add something to the confusion:
There is another thing which will fuck up for the whole lazy Linsuxx world ...

The Linsuxx world still relies on the outdated NetBIOS to work, which will have an end ... this fall.

Samba has a pull request from someone who did a WS-Discovery aware fork, but they were reluctant to merge it ... why care about modern standards, as long as one can ride the dead horse?

In short:
Once SMBv1 gets disabled, that also disables NetBIOS (Which is just a leftover from ancient IBM OS/2 / Windows NT 3.xx times).

I was preaching that for years ...

Thanks to Betacentauri, in oe-alliance images we do have a solution, a stand-alone WS-Discovery Daemon which succesfully enables Windows machines to find and mount our boxes even with SMBv1 disabled.

And OpenPLi did get a pull request for OpenPLi 4.0 to enable SMBv2 server support there: https://github.com/O...e-core/pull/173

That pull request also includes parts that are not strictly Samba itself, but the network stack part missing in Samba (Even still in 4.6.x ...) and thus should have been kept for OpenPLi 6.0 as well:

Ah, that explains why my boxes can't be found in network neighborhood anymore in Win. Not a big problem for me as mounting \\ip\harddisk works now with an uninstalled SMB 1 on Windows 10 and the boxes on RC6 with its new samba. I have been without SMB 1 for months now and everything works (only my Canon mf8540cdn can't scan to a share on my NAS anymore, but I have contacted Canon europe 2 months ago with the warning of the fall update and after a few weeks got a reply they will be releasing a new firmware version soon, they probably were not aware of this functionality ending this fall as my request was the trigger to make the new firmwares).

Note my E2 boxes being seen by Windows 10 although SMBv1/NetBIOS has been disabled ...

Windows 10 is using SMBv3.11 to connect to my boxes:

My boxes in turn use SMBv3.02 to connect to my Windows shares, couldn't get 3.11 to work yet.

Though they do not do that automatically, one has to give a flying f.ck on Crapwork Browser and just edit /etc/fstab and /etc/auto.network manually to get useful entries.
I begged for months across various forums to find some Python genius to work on important changes (A re-write of the borked Network Browser), but couldn't find anyone.

It wouldn't be a "bad idea" if MS would start using open standards, like bonjour/avahi. Problem solved.

https://en.wikipedia...ki/WS-Discovery

The protocol was originally developed by BEA Systems, Canon, Intel, Microsoft, and WebMethods. On July 1, 2009 it was approved as a standard by OASIS.

...

WS-Discovery is enabled by default in networked HP printers since circa 2008.

I predict the following:

In the end, it will be me who will have to re-write NetworkBrowser to work, but when it's finished, half a dozen devs will modify the code to be more pythonic here, better there ... rather than doing it right from the start.

BTW:

This is the whole wsdd(.c) code ...

I bet you would have done it better, if you would have had at all.

You need to specify the version in the mount options, did you that?

user=username,pass=password,vers=2.1

If that doesn't work, it might be the old version in OpenPLi 4 doesn't support it yet. I've tested the current develop version, and that works fine with SMB version 2.1, so the problem will be addressed soon.

And most NAS systems support NFS, so you could switch to that. It will be faster than CIFS as well.

Where exactly do I have to specify this WanWizard ?

I go to Menu/Instellingen/Systeem/Netwerk/Mountbeheer

Once there I see 3 possibilities Voeg nieuwe mount toe/Mount points beheer/Hostnaam wijzigen

Maar helaas zie ik nergens iets dat op user=username,pass=password,vers=2.1 lijkt

En indien ik het goed begrepen heb in andere threads zou OpenPLi 4 zelfs SMB 3 moeten hebben, klopt dat ?

Hi WanWizard

I have the same problem as Dream1975 and I would like to try your suggestion as well but I do not know where to do or where to edit them.

Is it in the SMB.conf ?

B.t.w. NFS is not possible in my case because I am using Windows 10 Home which does (to the best of my knowledge) not support NFS.

Those are mount options, so you need to enter the version in the option field (mount point beheer, edit the mount), which probably now only says "rw", so that should become "rw,vers=2.1".

The username and password are inserted, you don't need to define those in the options.

Good

BTW: The possible mount options do NOT depend on the Samba version. The support for mounting remote shares is part of the kernel, not Samba.

So even in OpenPLi 4.0 you should be able to use vers=3.02 if your kernel is 3.10 or newer (and the server supports it).

BTW: It's often claimed but false that NFS would be faster.

Atomic file operations (In seconds, less is better):
image.png

CIFS/SMB beats NFS in almost all categories.

(Random) Read/Write (In seconds, less is better):
image.png

While NFS is faster on Write, CIFS or SMB are much faster on read operations.

Source of the test: Linux-Magazin.
In this test, only the ancient SMBv1 or CIFS and the slightly less ancient SMBv2 were tested, so it weren't even the most current versions of SMB (3.02 or 3.11) being tested.

It's nearly impossible to find newer detailed and professional comparisons to see how SMBv3 performs.

Even this test isn't truely professional but Linux-biased, as it doesn't even get the terms right: It's SMB, Server Message Block. CIFS is ancient and dead.

If you happen to be a somewhat more experienced user (= capable of editing a text config file):

init 4
rm /etc/enigma2/automount*

edit /etc/auto.network (e.g. using "nano /etc/auto.network")

A typical SMB mount looks like ...

.. for a different E2 box, a NAS, any other decent server with passwort protection ON:
Slapkamer -fstype=cifs,vers=3.02,sec=ntlmsspi,rw,user=root,pass=verysecret ://quad4k/Harddisk
.. for a different E2 box with passwort protection OFF:
Slapkamer -fstype=cifs,vers=3.02 ://quad4k/Harddisk
Where "quad4k" is the hostname of the server and "Harddisk" is the name of the share.
If you are keen on typing stupid numbers, you can replace "quad4k" resp. the server's hostname with its literal numeric IP (IPv4 or IPv6) like people used to do back in the 90s of the last century:
Slapkamer -fstype=cifs,vers=3.02,sec=ntlmsspi,rw,user=root,pass=verysecret ://192.168.89.27/Harddisk

Useless additional post because I can't edit my last post anymore:

PS: You might need to adjust vers=
- to 1.00 if the Server is running Samba <3.6.x (E.g. Samba 3.0.x on VTi 11.x)
- to 2.02 if the Server is running Samba 3.6.x (and is configured with "max protocol = SMB2_02" because Samba 3.6.x defaults to "max protocol = SMB1" if not set otherwise! (Exception: Samba 3.6.x in oe-a images is patched to max version SMB2_02 already)
- to 2.10 if the Server is running Windows 7

I'll try to explain what I do and how I do it

Start with picture 1 - This is where I begin

I choose the for : voeg een nieuwe netwerk mount toe

This brings me to picture 2 - This is where I edit the mount

Which brings us to picture 3 - This what I changed

I changed NFS into CIFS (because I have Windows 10 Home edition which does not support NFS)

I changed the Mount options from rw into rw,vers=2.1

I click on OK in order to activate the changes and I get a screen which

tells me that the mount already exists and asks me if I want to overwrite the existing mount

I click YES and it looks like the changes are being made.

I exit the settings completely and I restart my ET8000.

When I look again at the picture 1 - This is where I begin

I can see that NFS and rw are back again.

What happened to the changes that I've made just before?

Is this what you wanted me to do ?

I tried to do it the easy way with DCC_E2 once I saw right in the beginning of your post that it was about the automounts.xml file and where to find it :-)
