Remove and install is always better. But you'll probably have to remove /etc/samba manually, as opkg will not remove files that have been changed or added outside it's control.

What samba password? There is no samba password. The password used is the linux password. I've only told you that twice?

No, all my boxes have a root password.
When I try to connect, either using Windows, using a linux mount, or smb:://ip in nautilus, I get prompted for username and password. I type in "root" and root's password, and I am in.

It's crazy, i have now exactly the same configuration but when i type the password , it's asked again and again.
It's possible that's a tdb (or other file type in /var/lib/samba) imported from my old OP 4.0 with autobackup, the problem ?

To test: I flash a fresh 6.1 OP
No import from autobackup
Telnet and passwd, to define the root password
modify just one line (guest ok = yes change in guest ok = no) in the root shared path in /etc/samba/smb.conf
Same issue, this is not an import from old parameter the problem.

This is my smb.conf:
root@formuler1:~# cat /etc/samba/smb.conf [global] workgroup = GOTHAM deadtime = 15 max smbd processes = 6 max log size = 5 guest account = root load printers = no show add printer wizard = no printcap name = /dev/null disable spoolss = yes map to guest = Bad Password security = user server role = standalone server unix password sync = yes local master = yes preferred master = yes oplocks = yes kernel oplocks = yes [root] path = / read only = no guest ok = no browseable = yes create mask = 0777 directory mask = 0777 [Media] path = /media read only = no guest ok = no browseable = yes public = yes writable = yes available = yes create mask = 0777 directory mask = 0777 [Harddisk] path = /media/hdd read only = no guest ok = no browseable = yes public = yes writable = yes available = yes create mask = 0777 directory mask = 0777
and the mount on my laptop:
=> ~ [wanwizard@catwoman] $ mount -t cifs //172.16.1.49/Harddisk /mnt -o username=root Password for root@//172.16.1.49/Harddisk: ******** => ~ [wanwizard@catwoman] $ ls -l /mnt total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Dec 14 2015 lost+found drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Mar 31 14:13 movie => ~ [wanwizard@catwoman] $ mount | grep "Harddisk" //172.16.1.49/Harddisk on /mnt type cifs (rw,relatime,vers=default,cache=strict,username=root,domain=,uid=0,noforceuid,gid=0,noforcegid,addr=172.16.1.49,file_mode=0755,dir_mode=0755,soft,nounix,serverino,mapposix,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,echo_interval=60,actimeo=1)

From other device.
mack@tripod7896 ~ $ mount -t cifs //192.168.1.13/root /mnt -o username=root Password for root@//192.168.1.13/root: ******************* mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
grrrrrr
And directly from the box
root@setopbox:/etc/samba# mount -t cifs //127.0.0.1/root /mnt -o username=root mount: mounting //127.0.0.1/root on /mnt failed: Permission denied
Same issue
I don't understand why it's ok for you and it didn't work here.

Some weird password?
Are your client and server in the same workgroup? If not, try
mack@tripod7896 ~ $ mount -t cifs //192.168.1.13/root /mnt -o username=WORKGROUPNAME/root
No service issues on the box? If you do
/etc/init.d/samba.sh restart
does it stop nmbd and smbd, and start them again, without error messages?
You can also add
log level = 3
to the global setting in your smb.conf, and then restart samba. This will add debugging information to the log files in /var/log. Do you see any error messages in there (smbd.log and nmbd.log)?
