Hello,
currently running 8.1 and went to the GUI to check for update ; the system says 570 (or so) packages to update with a recommendation to flash !
My question is : is it better to flash 8.2 with USB stick OR online update will do it correctly anyway ?

Online should work, it just takes some time.

Yes, i see this take a lot more time, I'm in the upgrade process right now and believe me it takes more, more time, but it works, so don't panic.

Last Sunday our new Release 8.2 finally came online.
Mijn schotel is een T90 met 10 LNB's. Daarnaast voor de fun nog een draaibaar systeem met een Triax TD 78.
Dreamboxen heb ik niet meer echt actief. Verder heb ik ook nog een een VU+ duo2 met 500Gb harddisk + een VU+ Uno, Zero, Solo 4K, Ultimo 4K, Zero 4K, Uno 4Kse. + ook nog een Xtrend ET7x00. Daarnaast heb ik ook nog diverse andere modellen w.o. een Formuler F4, ET8500, ET7500, Mut@nt 2400HD, Xsarius Fusion HD se en verder nog wel het e.e.a. waarmee op verzoek vanalles wordt getest. Iemand moet het tenslotte doen. 
Los van de eerder genoemde modellen heb ik nog wel een rits aan testsamples als Mut@nt 2400HD, HD60, GB UE4K, GB Trio4K, Maxitec Multibox combo en Twin, Octagon sf8008, sf8008 mini en last but nog least enkele modellen van het Grieks Duitse Edision.
Voor centrale opslag van media gebruik ik een Qnap 219P met tweemaal 2 Tb harddisks + een Synology DS414 met 12 Tb Totale opslag.

Attention: The introduction of FCC (Fast Channel Changing) for VU+ has broken transcoding on all boxes that don't use the streamproxy (i.e. everyone except VU+). It is being looked at.

Did the online upgrade this morning on my Vuduo4kse, it took about 5 min. 
Everything went OK (just little struggle with my personal keymap.xml file that I had to recopy).

Octagon 8008 still have old drivers
If that is actually a fact then the Octagon developers that maintain the BSP should be kicked.

My update didnt went well. I get this error now when I input opkg update or upgrade
free(): double free detected in tcache 2
Any clue how to fix this (except new flash)?

That's a long standing bug in opkg, no idea where it comes from. There are some fixes in Hardknott which is the OE basis for OpenPLi 9.
You keep getting this error, even if you try again?
I can see if I can backport those fixes, but no promisses....

Uses the same mechanism.
If you don't have anything installed manually (from ipk files), you can use the flash option from the menu, and select to make a backup before flashing. That will restore all installed plugins and your configuration.

Whe fixes I was thinking of are already backported, so your issue comes from elsewhere.
No more information from the error?
edit: can you run a "opkg upgrade -V3" and see it that gives you a more detailed error message?
