Whenever I visit Software Update, the VU+ Solo2 will attempt the online check but after a few seconds I will get the eternal top-left spinning wheel. Nothing works and I have to hard reset the receiver (long press of power button). It gets stuck, almost as a freeze. No logs in the HDD.

I think this started somewhere around the 20231127 / 20231204 versions (9.0 stable). Not sure. I've tried both reflashing and a Factory reset - issue remains.

Which version?
Debuglog could create logs.

If in doubt, back up the settings and re-flash the current image.

Thank you. I re-flashed the latest stable 9.0 image (20231218) via online flashing, restoring my previous settings. Also tried without restore.

I tried the debug mode two times. It gets stuck at the same point, but it seems in debug mode it manages to get out of this stuck situation after a minute or so.

This does not happen in standard mode. I waited more than 3 minutes, more than once. I'll just note that before this started to occur, this Update check was very quick (less than 30 sec.)

In the attached log, I think the point it gets stuck is around line 1770, [UpdatePlugin] Error

Can't be sure though.

It crashes in retrieving a Packages.gz index, which itr needs to find the latest update timestamp.

Unfortunately the log doesn't show what exactly is downloaded, and why that failed, thanks to one of @littlesat's unreadable one-liners ;).

Sounds like it is not able to retrieve something from the www. It does not fail directly as there is a try/except around it. Looks like the connection to the www is not ‘stable’ somehow… two devices the same ip address on your nerwok?

The problem with the code in the try / except block (oneliner or not) is that there is so muich going on that the cause of the error can not be determined beyond "somewhere in the one liner".

It makes debugging a lot harder.

I just added some debug code to it so we can better see what happened there. But it will be in develop.

No devices with same IP, but I do use a static IP (no DHCP). Using this configuration for years. Doesn't matter though, because I just tried again with DHCP. Issue remains.

Thank you. Let me know if I can do something.

FYI the Solo2 is connected via Ethernet to a router set in access point mode, which of course has a different IP than the main router. No recent changes in this configuration. Main Gateway IP is set correctly in network settings.

When the 'over next' build is ready you could try develop image... there is some debug code added. I understand you programmed a fixed IP without using DHCP....This may go wrong as soon something else get the same IP... and you also indicated that something else was changed in the network. I used a setting in a router so the box can use DHCP and via the mac address get a fix IP via a router setting... Which is much 'safer'.

Ok, I will try the next nightly build and post a log. No, there hasn't been any network changes. I only changed now what you suggested: locked the box's IP in the main router and switched the box to DHCP.

After switching to DHCP, I noticed a small improvement. Perhaps it's random or unrelated to this change. The update check completes normally and very quickly. I did not try to actually perform the updates. However, when entering "Show packages to be updated" the package list is shown normally, and the spinning wheel will appear there after a few seconds.

In this log I see you get to the choicelist after the first phase of the update.. Then I see a lot of up.downs and then OK.... en then you get a spinner.

But I also see network stuff there... at least getting attribute... and the spinner comes behind the message error in get timestamp.... This means it did not get a timestamp. But something else here triggered the spinner that comes later. But it happened after a second selection on OK.

Merry Xmas!

Here's another log, from the 20231224 developer build, debug mode. Crashed almost immediately after initiating the update check. Could not display "packages to be updated".

I can reproduce it:

>>> from urllib.request import urlopen
>>> from time import altzone, gmtime, strftime
>>> from calendar import timegm
>>> url = "http://downloads.openpli.org/feeds/openpli-develop/vusolo2/Packages.gz"
>>> x=urlopen(url)
>>> x.info().getdate('Last-Modified')
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
AttributeError: 'HTTPMessage' object has no attribute 'getdate'

the value itself is there in the header:

>>> x.info().get('Last-Modified')
'Mon, 25 Dec 2023 09:04:33 GMT'

Looks like the code is simply not compatible anymore with Python 3.9+.

@littlesat ?

Also, you shouldn't get a spinner if that exception is triggered, so there are more issues with that code.

No crash in there

Ok, technically it may not be either a crash or freeze, but I cannot get out of the spinning wheel in any case. It's stuck there.

I did some checks last week but I was not able to verify it. I see some request that mentioned getTime could not be accessed… but no spinners. I added some debug code last week. But at this moment I’m not able to view the zipfile. Better post the fragment here: please also ensure you network is setup properly.
