Same issue occurred again when I flashed the box from 8.3(20220904) to 8.3(20220925) - not able to disable surround.
Fixed by adding the AVSwitch.py again.

cat /proc/stb/audio/3dsurround_choices returns:
disabled center wide extrawide
(as expected)
cat /proc/stb/audio/3dsurround returns:
center
(current setting)
Adding AVSwitch.py made no difference, though I did notice the existing file had the .pyo extension.

It worked! Restarting Enigma2 reloaded everything and surround is now disabled

That's my bad, tested streaming with 8.2 D'oh!
Final tests. Second star 2s with 8.2 - distortion.
Star 2s in bedroom (8.2) set to use remote receiver as fallback receiver (8.1), and the same distortion.
As you say there is no driver difference then this has to be firmware.
