In Topic: mp4 playback no longer working

25 November 2012 - 00:50

Yep, I know that I'm in OpenPLi forum. :)
I might be wrong here, but I thought that Andy Blac's OpenVIX 3.0 is based on OpenPLi code/structure or something like that.
Hence my post in here.
Hope I did not push any wrong 'button' on doing so... ;)

Just to confirm that all my MP4 files do not play with the latest Open VIX 3.0 latest build, on GigaBlue Quad.
Hope you guys can solve this soon.
Cheers

In Topic: which alternative for vu+ duo

Hm, this happens with every product - it is simply their life cycle man. Obviously Vu+ company is pushing new products, putting more emphasizes toward the new kids on the block and give less and less support to the 'old' or mature ones. We like or not - this happens in all industries, not just STB's. ;)

In other words, GB Quad will have the focus of its dev team in the next months or so.
You can see yourself in their support page they have quite often released new drivers.
I am told that the support was very good a timely for other boxes in the past, produced by GigaBlue team.

To keep it short; GB Quad is maybe the best future-proof STB atm.

good luck with gigablue quad... it is still running kernel 2.6

Yes, I know, but I see no issues whatsoever. At least not visible ones ;)

The box is superfast! It boots in like 5 seconds - ie. when I have a crash screen which says smth like 'sorry the box will restart in 10 seconds', actually it shows the splash boot screen right after the crash screen fades out. Zaping is super fast. It has HD PIP. In my box I have 3 tuners - right now I am recording 3 different HD channels (one each tuner) and watching another HD recording without making a hiccup... :D

Anyways, GB Team seems that in a couple of weeks they will be releasing the new drivers. ;)

I am using the box now for about 2.5 years and the crashes are present the last 1,5 year.

It is not so that it crashes everyday but more once a week and almost always when it is updating the (rytec) epg list.
Do i run a lot of addons?
No only 1 skin(glassskin, which i really love), rytec epg+source, vu+ fan control and a app (dunno the name) for changing the mapping of my remote control buttons.

I use 1 HD, a 128GB SSD to be exact, but the crashes where already present before i added this SSD to my setup. Adding the SSD no effect in the crashes what so ever.

How many satteliets?
I use the hotbird 13, astra 19, 23 and 28 east, they are all dual lnb, this setup is present from day 1 a have the vu+
Which epg data source i load, mainly, dutch, english channels such as sky uk/bbc, erotic channels and german channels, nothing more.
The softcam i use is ccam, latest version, but also here does not matter which version i use it keeps crashing.

@Erik_Slagter
I use a completely default (pli) setup, no (extra) swap etc Don't know exactly if and how it is possible too use a swap partition on SSD.

What happens when it crashes is that the box does not respond anymore, in top left corner 2 icons are turning but nothing happens again.
Sometimes after 1 or 2 minutes waiting the box return to life but also a change you have to hard reset it (power off).
The crash it self is not my biggest problem, i "hate" more that after every crash i have to completely reload/sync the whole epg data again (on which it crash mostlikely).
Don't exactly know why the developer did not choose to save the epg data in a file or database and is accessed (when needed) from this file/database instead of running in the memory.

I believe myself it is indeed a memory (leak) problem, just to little memory for the apps on the box. All apps and OS get bigger, more advanced (what i like) but the hit the hardware limit of the box.
Therefore i was thinking of selling the box and get someting new with "more power" to prevent this from happening again.

I might be late already but I will give my suggestions anyways: :)

- I owned happily a VuDuo for 2 years, with OpenPLi and OpenVix and it was running OK till, I installed the 2.4 build of VIX (i think it was not yet called OpenVIX - hence the collaboration with OpenPli team). It was some months ago when the box started crashing quite often, with the same symptoms you described.
The cure of my problem was just the EPG location - I Changed it from usb stick (used for swap and epg), into internal HDD.
The root of your problem might be: if you use an usb stick for epg location, might be that the stick goes to sleep, or the stick is damaged. Or, you might have changed the location of epg into internal flash. If the latest is the case for you, I believe with just changing the epg.dat location to internal HDD will solve once and for all your crasshes.
And keep in mind that having dmore then 2 providers of epg data (especially sky uk or IT which have hundreds of channels) does mean that 'a lot' of data needs to be 'recalled' into memory of the box, which slows the box - till it crashes it.

- regarding the 'better box' than VuDuo, I would strongly suggest GigaBlue Quad - it is a monster compared to VuDuo in terms of speed of processor, internal flash etc. In terms of looks, it is much smaller than VuDuo, has a nice small LCD screen (showing picons and other info) and very nice build quality. The price (on online German retailer) is 399 euros.

I but my Quad a few days ago with two S2 tuners and 1 DVB-T terrestial tuner. Man, how great it feels when compared to VuDuo! :D
