Can someone please at specify the desired driver behaviour, one that allows both types of remote control to function? So it is clear what Vu+ have to change?

The kernel patch fixes that you couldn't use the number keys at all.

The alphanumeric keys on the backside of the ultimo remote don't work at all, so there's no reason for the driver to report having "alpha" keys.

I tried my Ultimo RC with Solo2 it was not working. I never saw an offer with keyboard RC.

Try with correct system code in RC. My ultimo RC IS working fine with solo2.

Milo's commit seems like fixing non-working digit keys.

About keycaps,
There are 2 types of R/C available for Solo2.
Default R/C without keyboard and optional R/C with keyboard.
Driver should take care of both types of R/C.
In this case, what keycaps of solo2 driver should be?
