EPG data is stored in memory, not in a disk file. This file is only used to write the EPG data to when you restart enigma or your box.
Tests in the past have shown that 5Mb is about the limit for a DM500, I never had issues on a 7000.
You could switch to SQLite to store your EPG. It will store the data in a database file on disk (CF or USB), it will be a bit slower because of that, but storing 20-30Mb is not a problem.
