First of all, thanks for the work that has been done on this image. Browsing the web does pop up OpenPLi on many international forums these days. Best of all, OpenPLi has it's roots in my own country and lives open-source.

So, I've been with my Dreambox 800HD Se for some time, and there are inconvenient changes going on. Dream-Multimedia decided to release more and more closed source code, and it threatens the future of OpenPLi for Dreambox. OpenPLi is moving on it's own way which goes well, but the attitude of Dream dislikes me.

Now, why not change from box? The Dreambox is still a valuable box to sell second-hand, and can be replaced without losses by a Extrend XT4000 or Maxdigital XP1000. As far as I can see, the XT4000 brings a better CPU, 1080p(50/60) support (I'm on CRT, but still), more RAM, HbbTV and all the open code OpenPLi needs. There is no (e)SATA support, but this wasn't used in my 800 se cause of NFS mount points.

Any strong arguments NOT to switch (or go XP1000)? The build quality (and remote) is probably Dreambox' selling point, but now it seems the best time to sell a Dreambox. Even the remote can be used on the XT4000 I saw.

Thanks, and will donate soon

(and this should be in Lounge and now it's here , oops)

XP1000 is good choice, but do not playbacks movies with DTS and is to know the lower power of single-core processor.

Hmm, I missed that other boxes are dual-core: http://wiki.et-view-...sicht_Hardware. Makes the CPU weaker than DM800SE then?

And for now Dutch HbbTV only works for Xtrend boxes bought in the Netherlands. ET6500 is just slightly more expensive there, has replacable tuner, (e)Sata, faster CPU. Does it do 1080p 50/60hz, and has OpenGL 2.0 ES any advantages?

Only can hope Xtrend will fix DTS some time.

I can compare single core in xp1000 with dual core in dm800se/vu ultimo and for all operations (especialy browsing menu, file operations, ftp etc) it is weaker.

Only can hope Xtrend will fix DTS some time.

if you think on single core boxes, it is not bug, it is feature, imho

Yes the SoC in both the ET4000 and the XP1000 (it's the same...) is for the low-end market (that's why it's so cheap). It has not directly something to do with the number of cores.

It's as usual, you get what you pay for. If you want a fast receiver and want to add several tuners (like I see a lot), you're better of spending a bit more.

Allthough the ET4000 CPU is fast, that's not de doble core you get in the upper STB range...I mean the very popular Broadcom 7413...mounted in all X-trend and certains VU+(UNO/Ultimo)...

May be for some actions, there are hidden bootlenecks...

My ET6000...now ET6500 is perfect...

From  OpenPli 3  Kernel 3.43, SD image reference quality is close to that my HTPC...

It's all digital, so it should be bit-for-bit equal to the (digital) output that other systems produce. If they are only close, (at least) one of them has a bug or is using some kind of post-processing on the resulting image (something you'll typically want to avoid).

Maybe guirigui has it's tv set connected using scart, component or composite ;)

For SD contents, the graphic card usualy offer best PQ than STB..it's still true especialy when using ATI GC...STB can't fight against post process capability of sophisticated PC graphic features..that's a fact...Even HD contents can be better albeit less obvious...

SD live playback or not is by the way one common reproach from STB users..

I am not using scart!!!!!! But before using linux STB, I have one very long HTPC experience.

Linux mipsel STB along with the help of OpenPLi team can offer very powerfull and stable overall features such as excellent recording/EPG, but in term of ultimate PQ, there is still long path before to achieve HTPC one's.

The BEST postprocessing is NO postprocessing. We've had this discussion so many times already.

What you want is a "distorted" picture that looks better to you. That's your right. But it's not BETTER than a picture that has had no postprocessing. The BEST picture quality is when what you see resembles most what has been recorded. And if that's bogus, it can never get any better than that.
