If anyone can actually describe the real benefits of this new box I will appreciate it.

Since I don`t find any new benefit with this new 4K box except the 2 x FBC DVB-S2X tuners.

The rest is already done by cheaper hardware (for example Amlogic S812 based)

I actually meant S905 which also doing 10bit HVEC decoding same as the BCM7252.

The older S812 only does 8bit. Still big difference 50 USD Android box vs. EUR 500

Add Openelec support to the Amlogic...and you got a winner.

The 50 USD android box is exactly that: an android box. VU+ Solo 4K is a complete STB, gigabit ethernet, transcoding capabilities, support for internal HDD, LCD display, twin DVB-S2 tuners plus additional slot for more tuners and ... it runs enigma2.

I have seen android based STBs and they all suck. And Kodi is great as a media center but not quite so for watching satellite tv - at least with all the PVR plugins I have tried the experience (aka WAF) is below average.

@Malakudi - thank you I fully understand what an enigma2 receiver can do and not do, but asking EUR 500 for

something which does not bring many things to the table - let`s be honest and say this.

If you are not familiar with wetek hardware I fully assure you that amlogic is fully capable of driving enigma2 software

and additional tuners and many other things which nowadays you buy them as gadgets ( USB SATA hard drive, gigabit connection etc.)

A begginer user will probably just jump and pay such royalty price for something which ..well it can be achieved with less investment.

And the consumers should be aware that such solutions exist. Have you even tried Openelec distribution with tvheadened and oscam ?

Such solution is working now with 50USD boxes. And development is going strong.

It is funny how vuplus and other copy & pasted enigma2 and with minor changes ripping the benefits of newer HW.

This technology is already overrated...

Fact remains you are comparing a 2CV with an CLK. Different hardware, different specs, different price. As simple as that. And given enough time and skills, you'd probably be able to buy a 2CV and a lot of additional components and make it look like a CLK. Not something I see the average end-user do.

And even if you could, I'd wonder what you will end up with, and at what cost. I've seen and tested the Wetek Play, and decided rather quickly there was only one place for it: marktplaats (ebay).

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

I am aware of openelec and tvheadend. Compare the ease of use of configuring and browsing the channels on enigma2 and openelec, when you have a complicated installation setup like mine: Thirteen satellite positions on diseqc 1.1 plus steerable dish with actuator and diseqc 1.2 positioner, both under a diseqc 1.0 switch. So it is 1.0+1.1 for 13 positions plus 1.0+1.2 goto pos for the steerable dish. And all those doubled, as I use twin tuner boxes.

I can configure this in enigma2 in less than 10 minutes from scratch. Less than 2 minutes if upgrading box (just copying and pasting the cat /etc/enigma2/settings | grep Nim). It takes ages to configure tvheadend with such a setup.

And not to mention the channel list with thousands of favorites and how easy you can set them up by just downloading Vhanibal list or similar.

I also know Wetek box but it doesn't cost 50 USD - and it doesn't support HEVC.

I have no argument on comparing apple with oranges. Was not my intention.

Edit: you can run tvheaded on vuplus and ..XBMC streaming is working just fine to a raspberry pie.

You can change the frontend from time to time costing only 50 bucks but how do you change the codecs in vuplus

to continue use it with latest streams ? I prefer adding a sat-ip box to stream to a client then well..

Different perspective.

I do agree that 500 euro for a box is way too much - but I also remember DM8000 costing 900 euro and people buying it!

What I mean is that the price doesn't always reflect the capabilities. I will buy VU+ Solo 4K (or similar hardware from other company) when it will cost an amount closer to what I paid for the VU+ Solo2 I have. I don't even have 4K TV, so there is no rush for it!

But that is the question:

what are the real capabilities supported by the manufacturer ? this game of supporting x,y,z feature on a long period of time in return of your 500 EUR.

How are they really supporting the customers ?

When most of the time they dont bring nothing new except higher CPU clock rates, provided by default in HW ..how is this a CLK experience ?

I really doubt that it is...

DM8000 was the first..you cannot compare anything which was released after with that. Because was a given that the software was new unpolished...

How about this 4k stb ...what is not polished ? Transcoding or the new skin they put on top of enigma2.

Comparing apple with oranges can go both ways...

Enigma2 first came with DM7025 so it was not the software you paid 900 euro but being the first Linux/enigma HD box with advanced features (twin tuner etc). When DM8000 went out and because I couldn't give the money for it, I tried some other boxes, one of them being the IPBOX 9000HD. Twin tuner like DM8000 but with different Linux software (and enigma2 later). I wish I have never bought that and waited. First box that really challenged DMM was VU+ Duo.

VU+ 4K is just the first 4K Linux/Enigma box. I am sure the price will drop as soon as there is competition.

You do bring an important issue though: Xtrend/VU+ and others haven't promoted anything in the Linux/enigma STB world. Even gstreamer 1.X adoption was driven by enthusiasts in this forum and others. No company have helped. Not even DMM (I guess they are busy with their Goliath project).

VU+ (or a part of it - I don't know the internals) at least tried with Prismcube to build a new interface for satellite STBs on top of XBMC/Kodi. The result was rather bad I must say.

You`re right they started with DMM7025 but that one was only mpeg2 and was only for testing since they were working heavily on dm8000.

I started with ufs910 and moved to dm800 ...and knew that there was heavy effort on polishing the drivers, enigma2 features added etc based

on users / customers reports. DMM did not just delivered the finished software product when the first mpeg4 receivers reached the market.

We all knew that and accepted it.  So what the heck are these new guys doing ? nothing...just play dumb and charge your customers.

It feels only bad that Openpli felt that they need to make a stand against DMM when they dropped open source support...

Was not deserved it... anyways life moves on ..so am I.

First box that really challenged DMM was VU+ Duo.

The ClarkTech ET-9000 (later Xtrend) was available before the VU+ Duo, with similar specs.

I reviewed VU+ Duo on March 2010, and ET9000 on December 2010. I had one of the first ET9000 samples, so I doubt it came before VU+ Duo.

Vu+ duo was pushed to the market when broadcom decided to open their doors to other players.

Nothing wrong with that. Probably the best choice they ever made for their sales growth.

Problem is not that. Broadcom always charges extra for features. Why these new guys not delivering on their promises ?

I dont get it. they sell SoC products..but they support that same as you will install windows xp on an Intel Core 7.

And this all empty promise " we cannot do more then that "..then why to pay the price ??

So excuse me..i have the rights to compare with 50USD SoC products which deliver better for less.

Nope, the DUO was the first out there; it was the very first DM competitor (and is still being sold :) )
Xtrend followed soon, after VU+ showed the market was awating E2-boxes.

You are absolutely right, looked it up, I received my ET-9000 on November 30th, my VU Duo on the 14th of January, so almost a year older... Time flies... ;)

this works all done on the fly

start recording the 4:2:2  to vu  /hdd

covert recording on the fly with ffmpeg save again to vu /hdd

play back

looks as good as original

ffmpeg -i /hdd/movie/instantrecord.ts -f lavfi -i aevalsrc=0 -shortest -c:v libxvid -qscale:v 2 -c:a copy /hdd/movie/instantrecord.mp4

Wow!

This is really something!

I wonder if my ET9000 can cope with it or if it is too weak.

Anyway, is there ffmpeg package available in the OpenPLi feed?

If so, what is the command to download and install it?

Thanks,

By the way, 4:2:2 is slightly off-topic here.

This would probably be a better place:

you will have use ffmpeg in windows then point that to your sat box

use the ffmpeg code above and 4 2 2 will work on your box

need someone to cross compile latest ffmpeg for mipsel as a binary

with the most common video and audio codecs enabled

then it can all be done from the sat box

Without hardware acceleration, only remuxing to different container is possible. Transcoding using software would take ages.

the video and audio are spot on

Yes it's possible, but not in real time.

And yes, ffmpeg usually has lots of codecs missing due to patenting and licensing issues. I recommend to compile it yourself.
