As I don’t own a Solo2 it’s hard to tell what might have gone wrong, besides the fact that in some hardware the memory might be limited for 8.1. I’m not sure if the Solo2 might suffer this issue too. So regarding your issue I wouldn’t know the solution besides trying a second time.
Mijn schotel is een T90 met 10 LNB's. Daarnaast voor de fun nog een draaibaar systeem met een Triax TD 78.
Dreamboxen heb ik niet meer echt actief. Verder heb ik ook nog een een VU+ duo2 met 500Gb harddisk + een VU+ Uno, Zero, Solo 4K, Ultimo 4K, Zero 4K, Uno 4Kse. + ook nog een Xtrend ET7x00. Daarnaast heb ik ook nog diverse andere modellen w.o. een Formuler F4, ET8500, ET7500, Mut@nt 2400HD, Xsarius Fusion HD se en verder nog wel het e.e.a. waarmee op verzoek vanalles wordt getest. Iemand moet het tenslotte doen. 
Los van de eerder genoemde modellen heb ik nog wel een rits aan testsamples als Mut@nt 2400HD, HD60, GB UE4K, GB Trio4K, Maxitec Multibox combo en Twin, Octagon sf8008, sf8008 mini en last but nog least enkele modellen van het Grieks Duitse Edision.
Voor centrale opslag van media gebruik ik een Qnap 219P met tweemaal 2 Tb harddisks + een Synology DS414 met 12 Tb Totale opslag.

Then you’ll have to flash via USB. Your backup is on the harddisk if I recall right so it will be restored.

Check the information, about menu. What version are you actually running?
It could be that for some reason the bootlogo is part of the backup, which is why you saw the old one after restoring the backup.
Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)
Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

It has 256 MiB flash.

Do I put the whole zip file onto the USB or just the 4 files within it solo2 folder?
My box is just stuck on starting screen now?
I cant log into it from pc or anything?

ufff! OK managed to get my box back on & working
However the wired thing is I put image 8.1 on the USB to reflash it but box has done the flash actions but has come on with the opld image.
Now im scared to try it again, haha

Looks like you didn't even check the link, as it doesn't point to the download, but to the flash instructions.

Enigma version 2020-08-29 (7.3 release)
Kernal version 3.13.5
When i did the initial online flash. I did being up the 8.1 bootlogo screen but then when back to old 7.3 bootlogo. Was just stuck on that page as i left it over 10-15 mins.

No, backup suite creates an image you need to flash, it doesn't interfere with autobackup...
I don't know of any way to revert back to an old version, other than it not flash at all. If if you say it initially boots with the 8.1 bootlogo, that couldn't be the case. Very weird problem, this...

When i flashed via online flash with backup. It went through like its updating with the two progress bars then the 8.1 bootlogo appeared. Then after a couple of mins it asked if i want to install backup settings. I clicked yes that is when it had a barnie and the old image logo appeared again and just froze there.
When i did a flash via usb it just made the old image work again?
Has any1 tried the 8.1 image dated 310821 on a vu solo2 to see if it works?
