I've found some posts about mkv (not all usable):

The conclusion is that the Dreambox cannot play mkv itself. But movieplayer works together with vlc on your pc. So, if your vlc can play mkv, it can stream it to movieplayer on the Dreambox. I think (didn't try) you have to make an entry for mkv in the Dreambox web interface: menu "Stream", Settings.

I made the entry above, now i can play mkv files but the colors are not always good and the movie is stuttering.

If i play the mkv file with vlc on my computer it plays good.

edit: fixed table layout

If it doesn't play well, try to lower the bitrate in your config. It also depends on the speed of your PC, Dreambox and network. So, you can only try to change some settings like bitrate and image size and see what works the best for you. Note that the DM500 has a really bad ethernet interface so may always stutter.

mkv is only a container to host mpg, avi or divx files

but the box can not play divx if that is what you want

on the Glassfibre 1GB DVB-C...
