About the issues you've mentioned in PM:
Moving /var to a pc share works fine, so it must be something in the NAS. Could you try to mount /media/var again, but with "LinuxExt" unchecked?

Tried with and without linux ext enabled which makes no difference,
as mentioned in last PM i read on some xbox forums people who were having similar issues ans it was mentioned that quite a few of the NAS boxes do no support file names/ dirs or folders that are longer than 12 characters?
This seems to fit in with the problem i am having as when i create the var it has a folder pli/$VERSION (16 numbers), and when I remove the VAR share it renames $VERSION to removeatnextboot (which is also 16 characters?
Just found this from a manual for a generic NAS drive like mine and many others:-
What are the naming limitations of the files located in the Eagle Tech NAS?
The maximum length of a folder/directory/file name is 12 characters. Invalid characters such as
“* \ : " < > . ? /” may not be used.
Is there a simple way of making the $version and removeatnextboot to 12 characters or less to test ?
