Being a moderator at openATV, I've seen users complaining about several issues (like not being able to rewind .mkv files) that are probably related to gstreamer 0.1 still being used.
It's a pleasure seeing that there is some activity about integrating gstreamer 1.x here at OpenPLI.
Could someone kindly give me a brief update on the current status, i.e. what is being improved or disimproved by switching to gstreamer 1.x, and whether remaining issues are likely to be fixed in enigma2, or considered to be issues in gstreamer 1.x itself?

The most interesting thing about gstreamer 1.0 is that there is no guarantee that it will fix any of these issues, on the other hand it proves to be quite difficult to integrate it into enigma2.

Sorry for having asked an inprecise question. When I asked about gstreamer "1.x", I actually was thinking of an enigma2 integration of one of the latest versions of gstreamer. They call 1.4.x "stable", and I think there are several programs out there using these versions of gstreamer that are running "basically flawless", with bugs only at levels of special functions which an enigma2 user could only dream of.
So one part of my question is whether the work done in enigma2 so far would already support the 1.4.x versions (or which version at most), the other part is the question from post #113 (with potentially different answers for different versions of gstreamer).

So it's time for all the other manufactures out there to upgrade Enigma2 to GStreamer 1.X and release changes back to community....
I have actually asked VU+ that question; since they have added nothing to E2 at all, I suggested it to be a good idea to invest a bit in software development.
Their answer was rather disappointing: "all images use 0.1" ....

I agree that support from a gstreamer developer is probably mandatory for the 1.x integration.
I also understand that convincing Enigma2 manufactures may be difficult. It is sad but understandable that no single manufacturer wants to pay for the benefit of all, and a cooperation of many would be difficult to organize.
That's why I'm planning to contact the gstreamer team directly, asking for support. I have already brought this up internally at openATV, and the first technical problem, donating a box to a gstreamer dev, seems solvable (thanks Thomas). Additional motivation (money) is probably impossible to raise. But having seen the "applications" web page of gstreamer, I got the impression that the team is a bit proud of their framework being used in so many applications, so maybe they could be willing to support us - as a result most Linux settop boxes would be using gstreamer.
However it would be an unlikely coincidence if any gstreamer dev was an Enigma2 dev at the same time. So I guess some support from an Enigma2 expert, preferably from someone who has already been working on the gstreamer integration, would be required. Are there any volunteers?

Look what I found on the gstreamer "news" page:
